2016: The Year of Informed eHealth Initiatives

We kicked off 2016 talking to a number of you about how data becomes information and how information can change the health service. Whether collecting data on diseases, facilitating the sharing of data between providers and patients or using it to bring quality care to remote areas, data-driven mHealth and eHealth initiatives are making a real difference to healthcare in Africa.

One such organisation is emocha. We talked to them about their TB mHealth platform and the impact it’s having on TB care in South Africa. And keeping with the trend of making smart phones smarter, biomedical engineers from Texas A&M University have developed a new technology that turns a smartphone into a mobile microscope to diagnose malaria in Rwanda.

We’re also seeing Zimbabwe lead Africa in the roll out of telemedicine services as we reported on the Ministry of ICT Postal and Courier Services of Zimbabwe signing a cooperation agreement with ITU to extend telemedicine services to rural and remote clinics and hospitals throughout the country.

Also talking about the importance of data was Lapo Bertini from Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) International who spoke to us about the importance of IHE in developing eHealth standards.

We also talked to the CEO of Frere Hospital, Dr Rolene Wagner, who is well known for the work she’s done to turn around poor outcomes at the hospital and shared her insights about how she aims to redesign the public health service at Freer for even better results.

And speaking of redesigning healthcare, the INCISION Academy sat down with us to talk about their innovative digital eLearning platform that is sure to change training for surgeons around the world.

Lastly, the HPCSA is establishing an Inspectorate Office to ensure that registered healthcare practitioners comply with all regulations governing their professions.

For us at eHealthNews, 2016 is going to be an exciting year as we bring you our inaugural eHealthALIVE 2016 event at the Sandton Convention Centre from 6-7 September. Visit the eHealthALIVE website to register and to stay up to date on the latest developments.

We look forward to bringing you even more news, opinion and features in 2016.
