Dear <<First Name>>

A big thank you to everyone who attended the Fifth Annual Gala Luncheon that was held on Friday 16 August at the Hotel Windsor. We had a great turnout from our loyal supporters, friends and the wider businesses and governing bodies. Thanks especially to City of Melbourne, Development Victoria, LendLease, RightShip, the Alma Doepel Supporters Club and Sail and Adventure individual Board Members who all took tables on the day. A special mention to the Vera Moore Foundation, Alphaxo, AWA Alliance Bank, BDO Australia, Searoad Ferries for their generous support of the restoration project and also I acknowledge our friends at Moorabbin Rotary Club, Victoria Star Cruises and Melbourne Showboat Cruises who not only attended the lunch, but  have generously supported the restoration over the years.
It was a great and fitting atmosphere to host the lunch at the Hotel Windsor. A special thank you to all our speakers - MC Brett McLeod (top L), Guest Speaker Vice Admiral Tim Barrett (bottom R), former voyagers Shae White (top R) and Matt McDonald (bottom L) and  Auctioneer from Biggin Scott David Lack.
As a result of the proceeds from the lunch, the raffle, silent and  main auctions and generous donations on the day, including $1000 from the Docklands Chamber of Commerce - the luncheon raised over $40,000 towards the restoration taking the funds raised within $300,000 of the return to water target. The Alma Doepel team look forward to having Alma back in the water early next year.. That is a great result. Thank-you everyone involved!
Progress on the Alma Doepel Hull
Amazing progress has been made on the Planking and Caulking stage of Alma's hull. Have a look at some very recent images taken on Tue 6 August and shows where all the money is going during this amazing restoration of a 116 year old Australian built 3 masted square rigged schooner.
Come down and have a look for yourself. Shed 2 North Wharf Rd.... open every Tuesday from 12noon to 2pm. At other times by arrangement of course!
Bow port, shipwrights are commencing a 6th row of planks - this one being fitted!
Bow starboard view of progress! Shipwrights affixing a new plank
Stern starboard view of progress! Stunning!
Underside from Bow to Stern view! What a lovely bottom!
Work is progressing on the "face" or stem as this is known.

Lost Treasures Found!

On Thursday 15 August Paul Webb, who is the great great grandson of Frederik Doepel, visted the shed and presented some treasures to Restoration Director Peter Harris.

Paul contacted us recently and advised:
My Grandmother is Pat Doepel (Fred Doepel is my Great Great Grandfather), my Grand Father is Geoff who passed away last year was the eldest son of the Doepel Family.  Anyhow we have been helping Pat move house and have come across a number of treasures that belong to the Alma, including the original build plans that Fred did for the boat that were later recreated about 50 years ago, amazingly by pure coincidence by my other Grandfather on the Webb side who was a draftsman . So we have both original copies, the 50 year old and the 115 year old.  We also have what we believe is Fred's scale model he used to build the hull .

Pictured here, one of the shipwrights, Mark, holding the original model of Alma's hull

Something New in the Shed

A few months ago someone who’s been on the fringes of the Alma Doepel restoration project retired from his usual job and has now joined the Alma Doepel Fund Raising Committee and the Alma Doepel Supporters Club Committee. (Sound like a familiar story?)

With a background in business and past associations with a number of community groups and their efforts at fund raising
Norm Boreham hopes to add a bit of structure and a few new things to our fund raising program over the coming months and ramp up distribution of the items that we already have for sale.
So, look out for some messages and Facebook postings from Norm. You’ll see some things pop up and it will be great if you can get on board and support Norm’s efforts.

He has plans to reinvigorate the Visitors Centre at the Shed and is looking for a few keen volunteers who’ll be happy to work in that space with him one or, preferably, two days per week – most weeks, between 10am and 2pm.

Please email Norm on: orders@almadoepel.com.au and let him know how and when you’d like to help and a bit about your experience that you think may help the organisation. Making good cups of tea and coffee, some cleaning and a bit of retail experience are not pre-requisites, but will be well regarded! He’s even looking for some people to do a bit of hand sewing of patches on polo shirts. (Not necessarily at the Shed)!  You never know what skills you have that he may be able to utilise! So, if you’ve got some time to help please drop him an email he’ll be pleased to hear from you.

Call for Early Newsletters

Another of our newer volunteers is Ian Scales.  He is trying to piece together the changes that were made to Alma Doepel during the first restoration that occurred between the years 1976-1984.
Do you know anything or have any information?

Ian has been seen around the Shed from time to time when he shows up at North Wharf with tape measure, camera and notebook. He is fastidiously documenting Alma’s pre-1976 hull structure.

What Ian has found is that the Alma Doepel office holds many of the old newsletters, but it turns out there are gaps which he would like to fill.

Ian would love to hear from you if you can provide originals, photocopies or scans of the following missing issues (the 1970s issues are of particular interest):

No. 2 to No 9 issues spanning Jun 77 - Mar 1979.Then issue No 22 Jun 1982, Issue No 29 Mar 1984.
Issue No 31-34 Sep 1984 - Jun 1985
Issue No 42-47  Jun 1987 - Sep 1989.

Probably sitting in a box somewhere, and would be nice if they could be found and given to Ian!

If you think you can help - email Ian Scales
