Best Evidence Technology
The UK's biggest CCTV redaction/face masking provider
We hope you’ve had a great summer – although it seems like a distant memory now!
In this month’s edition we’ve got exciting news, three new team members to introduce you to and we give you our opinion on CCTV redaction using artificial intelligence.
If there’s anything you’d like to ask us or if you have an idea for a feature feel free to get in touch on 01312 722721 or email:

We offer a full video masking service to hide data on video footage.
Data Protection legislation states that anyone has a right to see any CCTV that records them, as these pictures are technically ‘data.’
Anyone can use what’s called a Subject Access Request (SAR) to demand to see this data, and companies have a legal obligation to supply it within 30 days, and without charge. They may want the CCTV footage as evidence that the location was at fault for an accident or to prove that something they say happened, did happen. What it means though, is that the other people in the footage may have to be masked so that they are completely unidentifiable and that’s where our team of experts come in.
We also supply the forensic/CSI software that the police, military and government use to help solve crime and for security purposes.
With Subject Access Requests we often obscure everything except the Data Requestor.

There’s been a rise recently in companies offering Artificial Intelligence (AI) Face Detection. Here we talk to our MD, Michael Hartshorne about his views on why he thinks the human eye wins hands down.
Michael said:
“Often with these systems the onus is on the customer to convert the file and upload it to a server, which could be hosted anywhere. The AI attempts the masking and then it’s sent back to the customer to check and adjust. That’s very involved work and there is a risk that the customer may miss something a trained expert wouldn’t."
“I’m sure these systems have their place but, in my view, in this kind of industry robots can’t compete with the human eye. An algorithm won’t always pick up things that may identify someone who needs to be fully masked. The system may pick his or her face up in order to mask it, but it may not pick up say a tattoo on their shoulder or back, which for me is one of the examples of where the system may fall down."
He added: “With our company we don’t have that risk, every piece of masking we carry out, is done by one of our trained experts and then peer reviewed by a colleague which eliminates that risk of something slipping through.”
This year is a very special one for us as we’re celebrating our TENTH YEAR in business.
2019 has been good to us - we’ve won new contracts, gained new clients and this is the exciting bit - we’re expanding. We’ve welcomed three new staff to the company (more about that later.)
Company founder Michael Hartshorne is delighted:

“2019 has been the right time to expand. Orders have gone through the roof and we’ve won an order with one of the top five supermarkets, which is keeping the new team busy. They’ve settled in really well and are a huge asset to the company already."
“I’ve never really shouted about Best Evidence Technology’s success before but we’ve been security checked by the Ministry of Justice and as well as the police forces we work with, we also work with the military, banks and many retail stores, something I’m really proud of. I’m really looking forward to our new team growing the business further to help take us into the next decade.”

Although Best Evidence Technology Ltd was incorporated in 2009, our staff have worked closely with Police and law enforcement agencies since 1994. At that time Owner Michael Hartshorne was redacting/masking video footage of undercover drugs officers during ‘sting’ operations. If anyone’s identity was discovered the undercover’s life could literally be at risk. Those standards have shaped the work ethic at Best Evidence Technology.
Team Intro
Richard is a forensic redaction specialist and much of his role at present focusses on peer reviewing his colleagues’ work.
He has a wealth of experience in many fields including roles as a Housing Neighbourhood Improvement Officer, builder, taxi driver and selling military spares.
Natalie is a full-time forensic redaction specialist.
Previously Natalie was studying for a fine art degree at university but unfortunately was seriously injured in a car accident so was forced to finish her studies.
After a long period of recuperation, she had part time roles at South Staffordshire District Council before joining us in her first full-time role after the accident and we are delighted to have her.
Pam’s joined the team as our admin support, and we’ll tell you a secret – she’s Natalie’s Mum. She keeps on top of all our invoices and uploads much of our redacted footage.
Before joining Best Evidence, Pam has held various administrative roles with the RAF, security companies and South Staffordshire Housing.
In our next newsletter we’ll introduce you to our Managing Director Michael Hartshorne and tell you all about his background.
We were delighted to host a Forensic Analysis and Video Enhancement training course in our Stafford office recently.
International Trainer David Spreadborough from Amped Software delivered four fantastic days’ training.
Attendees included Surrey Police, Police Scotland, Nottinghamshire Police, Liverpool John Moores University as well as private companies.
"Thank you very much for doing such a great job on the disc submitting for masking. I will definitely be using your services again in the future. Consider me a satisfied customer.”
