November Meeting Social Event
Monash Earth Sciences Garden
Thursday the 24th of November

The first of its kind in Australia and the most comprehensive worldwide, the Monash Earth Sciences Garden is inspired by the geology and geomorphology of Victoria, Australia. A textbook brought to life. The Monash Earth Sciences Garden comprises a stunning arrangement of nearly 500 rock specimens, weighing up to 14 tons, laid out to represent a pattern of rock outcrops and set amongst beautiful native plants representing each geographical region. Head of School, Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, Professor Sandy Cruden, who was part of the team of Earth Scientists who developed the Monash Earth Sciences Garden concept, said the Monash Earth Sciences Garden establishes a brand new, hands-on approach to teaching geology, physical geography and atmospheric sciences.

The final meeting of 2016 will be a tour of this wonderful garden including a lecture by their outreach geologists. Afterwards we will have drinks with the postgraduate students and then go on to a yum cha restaurant in Springvale to celebrate the end of the year.

If you would like to join us for our fun tour and dinner, please RSVP here:

A Student Research Scholarship was awarded to me by the Victoria Division of the Geological Society of Australia. This gave me the opportunity to present a poster at Palaeo Down Under 2 (PDU2), an international conference in Adelaide, Australia (11th-15th of July 2016).  The event highlighted key areas in current palaeontological research as well as associated disciplines such as the use of digital media, synchrotron scanning and the use of drones.

I presented my poster related to my Honours research, titled ‘Adaptive significance in the hind limbs of extant and extinct emus (Dromaius species)’. My research aimed to identify any significant variation between the hind limb dimensions of the modern emu and their extinct relatives. The opportunity to present my research to date was invaluable as it allowed me to meet with experts in my field of research and to discuss my work with them.

There were also numerous highlights throughout the duration of PDU2. The event hosted many renowned speakers from a range of countries such as America, China and New Zealand.  It was fantastic to see such a strong international presence. I also found the conference to be very informative regarding new techniques in palaeontology.  In particular, Dr Scott Hocknull’s work on 3D digital and virtual techniques was very impressive.

The research that was presented at this conference was not only informative but also inspirational. Therefore, I am very appreciative of the scholarship that was awarded to me by the Victoria Division of the Geological Society of Australia.
The internationally renowned monthly social get-together

This monthly event provides an opportunity for members of the Melbourne exploration community to catch up on the industry “goss”, have a few drinks, talk technical, reminisce, and/or generally socialise. Occurring on the second Friday of the month, GeoPub Melbourne aims to become a regular event on any Geologist’s social calendar.

Join Us:  At 5:30pm, every 2nd Friday of the month as your work-spouse-budget-health allows.
Why:  Meet other people working / interested in geology, mining & exploration.
And Do? Catch up on "goss", have a few drinks, talk technical, reminisce, and/or generally socialise.
