ONLINE NOW: HOW TO FASHION
WITH DEAD WHITE MEN´S CLOTHES
In the seventh episode of the HOW TO FASHION video series, Jojo Gronostay, founder of the Viennese label DEAD WHITE MEN´S CLOTHES (DWMC), talks about the connection between art and fashion, social grievances and luxury, the role that context plays in reception and how fashion can be political.
DEAD WHITE MEN'S CLOTHES is a transdisciplinary label that operates in the fields of art and fashion and deals with questions about the fashion system, neocolonialism and identity. DWMC was founded in 2017 by Berlin born Jojo Gronostay, who among other things studied art and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and art at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
The Kantamanto market in the Ghanaian capital Accra is of central importance for his label DEAD WHITE MEN'S CLOTHES. This market is one of the world's largest collection points for used, mostly donated clothing from Asia, Europe, North America and Australia, which is returning here to the cycle of capitalism.
HOW TO FASHION with DEAD WHITE MEN'S CLOTHES was produced by the Austrian Fashion Association and realized in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency, which supported DWMC with their creative_pioneer program in 2019.
As part of the Austrian Fashion Awards 2021, DWMC was awarded the Fashion Award of the City of Vienna. The Austrian Fashion Association supported DWMC in 2021 with the funding program AFA support visual focus and in 2020 and 2019 with the funding program AFA support collection.
