Lancet Commission on Global Surgery

An open process to promote surgery as a public health measure

Welcome to the April newsletter of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery.

The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Rural India Regional Meeting was hosted at Jan Swasthya Sahyog on March 1, 2014 with both live participants and through conference calls. Consensus Recommendations were developed. The Commission was also presented and discussed at the annual meeting of the West African College of Surgeons in Kumasi, Ghana and the 1000+ OBGYN conference in Accra, Ghana. Our efforts to reach out to the surgery, obstetric and anesthesia communities continue.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming regional meetings. The next regional meeting will take place in collaboration with the Alliance for Surgery and Anesthesia Presence during the International Forum at the Annual Scientific Congress of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in Singapore on May 5th.

The 2nd Commission meeting is scheduled for June 19th and 20th in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The majority of participants will be providers and stakeholders from low- and middle-income countries.

A comment highlighting the need to include surgery and anesthesia as an integrated part of the proposed WHO/World Bank framework for Universal Health Coverage was submitted by the Commission.

Two Lancet Commissions were recently published on investing in health and global governance for health, respectively. The work of these and other previous commissions inspires the Commission on Global Surgery.
