Collecting the Core Surgical Indicators
Last year, Dr. Jim Kim, president of the World Bank, stated that "surgery is an indivisible, indispensable part of health care." As we continue to strive towards global equity in surgical care, we must first be able to understand the problem at hand. Therefore, the Commission developed 6 core indicators which we feel are crucial to measure a national surgical system’s strength and capacity.
As our Commission moves forward, we are excited that countries are adopting the indicators as part of their national process. In Niger, our contacts at the Ministry of Health have informed us that they are now including the indicators in the next study of the National Institute of Statistics. Moving forward, this information will be provided systematically every year. We congratulate Niger on their efforts, and look forward to seeing how these changes help to improve and develop their surgical systems.
