Aloha KKCR Listeners

KKCR has seen great changes in 2016, with the remodel of our primary studio, the graveling of the parking lot and addition of Lindsay as our Music and Outreach Coordinator to name just a few... Thanks to everyone for Supporting KKCR in our Fall 2016 Membership Drive.  We're excited to welcome 179 new members, a cool new Tee Shirt Desgin (Thx Lindsay) and Liko Martin to our Talk Story Series.

Great news! Our Mt Kahili Transmitter has been repaired, we are just waiting on a few days of gentle trades to get to the mountain and return KKCR to full power. In the coming months we'll be broadcasting from a new frequency (88.9 FM) on the island of O'ahu.

Well, the times they are a changing...
As we were warned several years ago, Our CPB Federal Funding is fading away,...  In the past CPB provided 1/3 of our operating budget... we have downsized to accommodate the shrinking support... now we will need to adjust for their absence.

2017 marks KKCR's 20th year of broadcasting.

KKCR PROGRAMMERS

Richard Fernandez
Sunset Jazz ~ 6-8pm Alternating Mondays

Congratulations to KKCR founding member and volunteer programmer Richard Fernandez, the Parnelli Lifetime Achievenent Award Winner!

Richard shares his love of jazz music on his KKCR program "Sunset Jazz" every other Monday evening from 6-8pm.

"I never knew anyone who didn't admire him to the bottom of their soul," said Petty of Fernandez, noting how the East L.A. native was lucky to have "really good parents who raised a really good man."

"When musicians are out on 'the proud highway,' we need all the help we can get," says Graham Nash. "The secret is a good tour manager. For decades, Richard has been that lifesaver. I am pleased to have been taken care of by such a professional. Congratulations to him, because this award is well deserved."

"Richard was the unanimous choice of the Parnelli Board of Advisers," says advisory board chairman Marshall Bissett. "From Faces to Tom Petty, he has brought class, style and humor to the impossible task of keeping band, management and crew in harmony. We know of no one more loved by his clients or respected by his peers."

KEKAHU FOUNDATION

Kekahu Foundation Board of Directors from left to right:  Jonathan Jay, Steve Thatcher, Tod Walker, Anni Caporuscio, Jeff Frisk, Carl Imparato and Donovan Cabebe

KKCR is operated and overseen by the Kekahu Foundation, a non-profit organization whose Board is responsible for the station’s long-term direction, policies, financial health, legal compliance, effective management and stable operation.

Aloha KKCR Supporters!  We will soon be celebrating our 20th year of providing our precious Garden Island with unique, quality, homegrown Community Radio.  The efforts and dedication of many, many volunteers, underwriters, staff, and supporters have got us to where we are today, and I would like to take this opportunity to offer a Mahalo Nui Loa to all of those people, past and present.  An extra mahalo to all the new members, old members, and Waveriders who made our recent membership drive a success.

As most of you know, the Kekahu Foundation is the license-holder for KKCR.  The Board of Directors of the KF sets policy, develops strategic plans, hires and oversees the General Manager of KKCR, and assumes fiduciary controls, among other duties.  The many volunteer directors of the KF have guided the Foundation and KKCR with dedication, vision, and integrity for these 20 years.
The Board is currently seeking new directors to expand its’ capabilities.  We are especially interested in welcoming those that may have expertise in fund raising. KKCR has subsisted and grown with support from members, underwriters, and various grants over the years.  However, after 20 years of mostly hand-to-mouth financial operations, it’s time to ensure that KKCR has a steady income to fund day-to-day operations and finance potential future capital improvements such as a permanent broadcasting facility.

If you are reading this edition of Airwaves you are obviously a KKCR listener and fan.  If you have the desire and skill set to help KKCR attain an elevated level of prosperity and security, we’d love to talk to you about joining our team.  If you have expertise, but don’t feel you can make the commitment to join the Board, we’d still like to talk story and hear what you may have to offer.  All the details of joining the Kekahu Foundation Board of Directors can be found on the Kekahu Foundation tab at www.KKCR.org.  Join us, and be a part of one of the most unique and special non-profits in Hawaii!

Aloha, Imua,
Steve Thatcher,
President, Kekahu Foundation

COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD

Positions Now Available On KKCR Community Advisory Board

The Community Advisory Board of the Kekahu Foundation/KKCR requests and receives feedback from the public  on how well programming and policies are meeting the mission of KKCR to educate, entertain and give voice to the underrepresented in our community.  Important funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that KKCR receives requires this necessary communication and access link between the listeners being served and the Kekahu Foundation Board Of Directors and management, that truly establishes KKCR as a public trust resource.   The CAB makes recommendations based on input received from the public at meetings as well as on the 5th Monday of the month CAB Show .

Speaking of which, we received some interesting calls on the last CAB Show October 31. Consistent and increasing requests to develop a news department , with a news director and editing capabilities, and a couple potential qualified volunteers in the process of stepping forward.  The public in invited and most welcome to bring us your feedback as well as get a glimpse of the inner workings of KKCR  and and meet some of the people behind the scenes.  We can also answer any questions you may have about becoming a volunteer and joining our community of "deadicated " volunteers, cooperating for the greater good, to bring you the quality broadcasting you deserve.

Other ares of interest to discuss and update at the CAB meeting include ongoing implementation of programming standards and guidelines, developed from community feedback, intended to address requests  from programmers,  as well as listeners,  wanting  to "raise the bar " of programming on KKCR.  An import part of the process is the feedback we receive at meetings  so please come offer your suggestions.

Another area to discuss is our membership at Pacifica from which we receive Democracy Now.  Also available from our Pacifica membership is access to Audioport with its many informative and educational programs that support our mission and have been requested by listeners .  Interested? Maybe you can help bring this about!

But mostly want to welcome our latest members Mose Orion and Jimmy Trujillo‼️ Two long time volunteers with great appreciation of KKCR's mission .  Welcome aboard gentlemen and we are still accepting applicants for the CAB, especially would like to have some women join us.  Current members also include Paul Moody, Larry Magnussen, Ed Coll and myself Mickey Sussman.

Please contact us with anything important to air and/or if you would like to participate!! cab.kkcr@rocketmail.com
