"More than just a fun time in Alabama, it helped me learn about my
community and what I can do to help."  J.D., age 17

TOP Youth Hit the Road

In early October, nine young men who are or have been in state custody, travelled with Oasis and DCS staff to Montgomery, AL to engage in service learning and cultural enrichment activities. It was the trip of a lifetime!  Youth spent 3 days in service and leadership, strengthening life skills, positive motivation, connection to community, and sense of purpose. "This was an opportunity for youth to see themselves as change agents in their communities...and beyond," said Linda Copeland, DCS Children's Program Coordinator and one of the adult "coaches" on the trip  "Without fail, they rose to the expectations set for them...proving what we already knew:  that the offenses they committed are not WHO they are but only WHAT they have done."

We are excited to welcome Adrian Cartledge to the TOP team at Oasis Center.  Adrian has 20 years of experience in residential work with youth, including directing Level III facilities with Omnivisons in TN. Adrian will be a TOP trainer and also manage multiple TOP implementation sites.

Welcome also to two new TOP sites:  Omnivisions Roane Academy in Rockwood, TN and G4S Stones River Academy in Nashville.

A new, updated TOP curriculum is in the works from the Wyman Center and expected to be ready for use in summer 2017. Drafts of new lessons are already available for testing. Contact your TOP Manager to access them.

TOP continues to be a part of TN Dept of Children's Services moving its Youth Development Centers from a correctional to a therapeutic approach. Gateway to Independence, Wilder and Mt. View centers are all in the early stages of TOP implementation. Youth at all three centers are responding enthusiastically to the supports and opportunities TOP provides.
