The CAT Bus Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary!

Ten, Diaz, X, Decade, Dime, 10!

There are many ways to say it, and we are truly excited to be celebrating it...the big one-oh!  It is the CAT's 10th anniversary this year.

Back in May of 2004, the CAT bus was dedicated and began giving its first rides.  Click here to read more about the history of the CAT bus.

To celebrate, we will be hosting an open house event on on Tuesday, May 6th, 2014, the actual anniversary date of the CAT dedication.

We'll be kicking off our open house with a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony with the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce at our transit building (3750 East Rosser Avenue) in Bismarck at 2:00 p.m.  Join us for our open house anywhere from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Stop in for some anniversary cake along with other refreshments, visit with our staff,  take a tour of the facility or a CAT bus, or just mingle and network with the other attendees. We hope to see you there on May 6th!

CAT Bus Surpasses a Million Rides Since 2004 Beginning

Just on the brink of our 10th anniversary, Capital Area Transit (CAT Bus) not only reaches a million rides given, but we also surpass it.

CAT closed out 2013 with a total of 135,466 rides given.  This brings the total number of CAT rides given to just under 1,160,000 since the CAT’s beginning in May of 2004.  “The actual million ride mark was reached in early March of 2013.” Stated operations manager Al Wangler.  “We are happy to still be providing the people of Bismarck and Mandan with affordable public transportation, ten years later.”

The CAT bus officially turns 10 years old in May of 2014.

"The CAT Hours Don't Work with My Schedule."

If you haven't heard about the Guaranteed Ride Home Program yet, now's the time to take a look!

We realize CAT bus hours of operation do not always accommodate everyone’s work schedule and we want to help you get home.  And unfortunately, the cost to extend the hours of the CAT bus routes is not feasible at this time.

Just catch the CAT bus to or from work and we will help you with your next ride to or from work if it’s not during regular CAT operating hours.  How?  The CAT driver will give you a $5 taxi voucher to be used toward your trip fare.  It can be used that very same day, if you choose.

There is nothing to sign up for, you just have to posess a vaild 30 day CAT pass to show that you ride the CAT regularly.

If your job is important to you, but transportation has been an issue, this program can help save you time and money by getting you to and from work.

The CAT Prowls on Social Media

The CAT is on social media.  In fact, we find it to be the purrrrfect way to let our riders know about upcoming promotions, weather/holiday closures, route changes or delays, things going on in the community, CAT events, new videos, educational info and transportation planning events.  Sometimes we'll even share little fun tidbits about what is going on around our office!

Driving Forward with New Technology

Bis-Man Transit's ParaTransit Service is Becoming More Proficient with a New System

Back in October of 2013, the riders of our Bis-Man Transit ParaTransit service no doubt noticed some changes.  One of the most visible changes riders saw was the new tablets that have been installed on all of the ParaTransit vehicles. And if you scheduled a ride shortly after these arrived, you maybe even noticed us getting used to our new system.

These changes are thanks to a new system that was installed called RouteMatch.  RouteMatch is a scheduling, dispatch, customer data, trip verification and global positioning system (GPS) technology  that we installed in order to ensure a more effective, safe and economical system.

With the tablets on the vehicles, the drivers are able to better locate new addresses and verify rides.  We also now have real time GPS locators for our vehicles.  This allows us to easily track exactly where the a vehicle is and where it has been throughout the day.  We even have the ability to see how fast a vehicle is moving at any given time!  This system will continue to get better, and we will continue to become more proficient with it so that we can improve upon our service to our riders.

Some of this RouteMatch technology will soon make its way onto the CAT buses as well.  The tablets and GPS locators will be integrated into the CAT buses.

And if you think we are excited to celebrate our 10 year CAT anniversary...just wait until next year when Bis-Man Transit ParaTransit turns 25!
