Tanglewood Advanced Camp Production!

Saturday July 21, 2018 * 1:00 pm
Adapted by David S. Craig; Directed by Jeff Catanese
Performed on the Mainstage

You LOVED this movie! Now it's your chance to see it onstage!

Our Tanglewood Advanced Summer Camp group (23 local teens!) worked hard memorizing lines, rehearsing, and helping with design elements to put on this complete show in less than 2 weeks! You will be amazed at this budding talent and impressive creativity! This event is open to the public and tickets are $5.

The story: Bastian Bux is grieving. He just lost his mother, his father works all the time, and he is being bullied. Bastian, on the run from bullies, sneaks into an antique bookshop where he finds a book called “The Neverending Story.” Intrigued by the book, Bastian begins to read and embarks on a journey to Fantasia, a mythical land inside the book. As Bastian’s journey progresses, he must fight to save Fantasia and learn how to cope with his own life. The Neverending Story is a timeless tale that explores issues of bullying, depression, family, and hope.

Where: 35below at Asheville Community Theatre
Cost: $225
Ages: Rising 6th-12th grades

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of improvisation such as active listening, making positive choices, being both verbal and physical, and focusing on the other performer. Students will learn skills that not only make them better performers, but also better young adults. This camp will teach students to have confidence in their own point of view, accept “mistakes” as gifts, become inspired team players, and communicate their ideas more effectively. The last day of camp will feature a performance for invited friends and family.

Taught by Tom Chalmers, the Chair of the Asheville School of Improv and a member of Asheville’s premier improv troupe, Reasonably Priced Babies (PS - he's awesome). Tom previously taught this camp at the NYS3 studios and has taught youth improv as part of ACT’s Tanglewood Summer Theatre Camp and at Weist-Barron, the children’s television training program in NYC.

Robert and Cait reunite thirty-five years after a walking tour of Dublin brought them briefly together. As the older couple rediscover each other, their younger selves, Robbie and Caithleen, retrace the events of their short-lived love-affair. However Time may have a plan this time around. This Irish time-travel love story blends wit, humor, and heartache into a buoyant, moving appeal for making the most of the present before it is past.

Auditions!

August 4, 2018 * 1:00-4:00 pm - on the Mainstage
August 5, 2018 * 6:30-9:30 pm - in 35below

Our 2018-19 season opener is right around the corner, and we're looking for our cast! We're trying something different for these auditions - instead of preparing a song of your choice, director Jeff Catanese has requested that you prepare a specific song for the character for which you're auditioning. We posted all of the songs and the sheet music here, so you'll know what to prepare!

You must be 18 at the time of auditions to audition, and we encourage anyone who's not familiar with the show to become familiar prior to auditions. It's often described as an R-rated Sesame Street, and - for real - it's definitely R-rated!

The Book of Job as a comedy? Joe Benjamin is a God-fearing tycoon with a Long Island mansion and a prodigal son and two kooky twins among other family members. After Joe is visited by Sidney Lipton – God’s messenger (and Joe’s tempter) – his life is never the same. Director Jim Reid seeks a cast of 8 for this Neil Simon show that will be performed as Readers Theatre. Aren't familiar with the show? Check out a script from our Box Office (Tues-Fri, 10-4)!

NC Premiere on the Mainstage!

August 17-September 2, 2018
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm; Sundays at 2:30 pm
Performed on the Mainstage

After stumbling upon an outdoor production of a Shakespeare play in Manhattan, Long Island landscaper Bob Malone returns home inspired to write a play about his troubled marriage. He hires two reluctant New York theatre professionals to spend a week at his home and stage the play in his garage, with a cast of colorful locals. A modern romantic comedy with a moving and unexpected ending.

We know you've never heard of this show, but we LOVE this script. It is a gem. We're proud to be the first to premiere it in the Old North State (and glad that you'll be the first people to see it!)
