Centro's first community-wide appeal

Dear friends,

Centro Hispano of Dane County (Centro) is at the forefront of the local response to the pandemic for the Latino community. We are acting to alleviate the impact of the virus on multiple levels and to support our families in need.

To protect our families this year we had to cancel our annual celebration gala -- for the first time in over thirty years of holding this event. The gala was the most important fundraiser for Centro and an important event for the Latino community and its allies in Dane County.

With RESILIENCE, Centro's first community-wide appeal and social media campaign, our goal is to still support our families and to uplift the voices in our community.

We hope to raise $50,000 by October 31st (the equivalent of if we had 500 people attend our annual gala). If we reach our goal, UW Health has offered to match the $50,000 dollar for dollar -- that's $100,000 for Centro programs and double the impact for your gift.

I am a Dreamer – my status right now is Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. I was very young when my family came from Mexico. DACA gives you temporary protection from deportation.

Now I am a full-time student at UW-Madison. On top of that, I work in the All of Us initiative at UW Medical School. I also work in a lab at school, and then I work at Centro Hispano in youth mentoring. A lot of people ask why I do that many jobs. I’m like, “Why do you think?” I can’t afford tuition on my own. I am not eligible for assistance. On top of that, in Wisconsin, people without legal residency pay out-of-state tuition. I realize I have to work 10 times harder to get to where I want to be. The only reason I am attending university is because of the Latinx community. I received a scholarship from Centro Hispano, and I’ve won several other scholarships. Read more.
