5th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along

Hallelujah!

All are invited to raise their voices together in a classic holiday choral work during the 5th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along at Calvary United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 5th at 4:00pm. Calvary's Music Director Brian Burns will once again be conducting this year's concert along with David Bridge on the organ and chamber orchestra.

The performance is a community "sing-along," with professional soloists, an orchestra, and an amateur chorus. The annual concert started five years ago out of a desire to provide the Northside community with a sing-along rendition of Handel's most beloved work, "Messiah". The sing-along was founded on a principle of openness - everyone is welcome in the choir, and everyone is welcome in the performance. As an audience member you are not required to sing, but you are certainly invited to sing.

This holiday tradition now brings up to 400 people to Calvary UMC to sing selected choruses including the famous "Hallelujah Chorus". Audience members are asked to bring 1-pound non-perishable food items for the pantry at Northside Common Ministries. In addition, we ask you to bring reusable totebags (you know, those give-away totes we all collect for grocery shopping, etc.) These are needed for those who use the pantry and are, of course, better for God's earth than plastic bags. Cookie reception with the artists follows in the Victorian Chapel. It's a fantastic way to kick off the holiday season, and we invite everyone to join and sing for the joy of it!

Soloists
  • Anna Singer, Soprano
  • Mary Beth Sederburg, Mezzo-Soprano
  • George Milosh, Tenor
  • Matthew Hunt, Baritone

Festival Choir Choruses
  • And the Glory of the Lord
  • O Thou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion
  • For Unto Us a Child is Born
  • And He Shall Purify
  • Glory to God
  • Hallelujah Chorus

Calvary United Methodist Women (CUMW)

A Message from CUMW

The Calvary United Methodist Women held a very successful first official meeting on Saturday, November 7th at the Parsonage, and much work was accomplished! This was the first meeting to re-organize the Calvary Church Methodist Women's Group. It was decided that we will continue to meet at the parsonage for the winter months (Thanks very much, Ellen Homitsky), and we will meet the first Saturday of each month at 10:00am. Each member will bring a "batch" of cookies to the next meeting, to be used for the reception after the Messiah concert and for the House Tour. A collection was taken to be used to establish the CUMW bank account. The meeting closed with a litany: "Lord, expand our sister circle wider".

Our next meeting is Saturday, December 5th at 10:00am. Please come and join us! All women are welcome! We are looking forward to all of the amazing things that we can accomplish as a group. This truly is an exciting time at Calvary.

The Missions Committee is Sponsoring a Family from HEARTH this Christmas

A Message from the Missions Committee

This Christmas, the Missions Committee will once again sponsor a family from HEARTH who provides transitional housing for homeless women with children. Our family this year consists of a mom and her three children – two girls, ages 10 and 3; and a boy, age 8. The gifts will be delivered to Hearth on December 11th, so we’ll need them by Sunday, December 6th. HEARTH asks that we spend $100 on each family member. Please see Lynn Sevick or Myles and Joan Bradley if you would like to see the list and purchase a gift or give a monetary donation to help pay for the gifts. We received a lovely letter from last year’s family.

Learn more about HEARTH at http://hearth-bp.org/

Poinsettias

Poinsettias are available for order now for $8, In Honor or Memory of your loved ones. They will decorate the altar for Christmas Eve, and can be taken home or donated to be delivered to shut-ins, after the service. Order forms can be found at each entrance to the sanctuary.

"Feed the Sheep" Fellowship Luncheons

“If you love me, feed my sheep.”
- John 21:15-19

We are still in need of sponsors for upcoming months.

For only $70 you, or a group, can provide a light lunch to the people you worship with. Sponsors are responsible for serving the meal and cleaning up the Fellowship Hall and kitchen once the meal is over. The total sponsorship cost is $70. A group can divide the cost among themselves anyway they choose.

If you, or a group, would like to sponsor a fellowship luncheon, the below forms are available next to the Sunday bulletin for you to fill out. Once you have completed the reverse side of the form with all of the required information, please place the form along with the $70 in an offering envelope. You can then place the envelope in the offering plate.

You can also email the required information on the below form to calvaryumcpgh@gmail.com and instructions on sponsorship payment will be emailed to you.

Once the church office receives your sponsorship form, either Doug Lucas or Mike Schnitgen will then contact you with the date of the Sunday that you or your group are to sponsor. Special dietary requests can be discussed at that time.
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mission News - "Thank You!"

Thank you to all who donated cranberry sauce for this year’s Thanksgiving baskets.  With your help, we were able to not only reach our goal of 200, but surpass it by 20 cans, plus an offer of more! The baskets will be put together and distributed on Monday, November 23rd. If you’d like to help build the baskets, please call or e-mail Lynn Sevick at 724.272.9478 or lynnsevick@mac.com.

“Let There Be Light” Campaign

Calvary recently enhanced the lighting in the Sanctuary, Chapel & Vestibule, and the total cost was $26,000. We are having a campaign to raise money to cover the cost of this project. An anonymous donor has offered to match every dollar donated up to $13,000. We have raised a little over $8,000 to date so we have about $5,000 to go. If you are able to donate to this campaign, please indicate “Lighting” on the offering envelope.
