News from the Calvary United Methodist Women

United Methodist Women (UMW) is a worldwide organization which focuses on mission with women, children and youth. At the United Methodist General Conference in Portland, OR, UM Women Day was celebrated to mark their 150th anniversary. Women had a day of celebration, advocacy, and recommitment to mission with women, children and youth on May 16, 2016. Women long ago realized that they were seen as less important and along with children were not getting the care and support they needed; so, a few Methodist women in a few churches got together and began to help women in other countries, thus began this worldwide organization.

It is exciting that Calvary UMW is now reorganized and getting started on its journey again. Our church used to have a very vital and active unit which served many meals and collected money for our purpose. The UMW Purpose: UMW shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. We are inviting all women to become part of this worldwide organization. Much has been done and can be done when women get together for mission.

Volunteers Needed for Old Allegheny Antique Show on October 8-9, 2016
We want all women to know about our program for the Fall so all may take part. Our first meeting will be on Saturday, September 10th at the church beginning at 10:00am. We are embarking on our first fundraiser by hosting a table at the Antique Sale on October 8 &9. At our meeting we will be getting items ready for that event. Please come: “many hands make light work.” We will also need women to work at the table on October 8th & 9th.

Guest Speaker on Sunday, October 2, 2016 - Nancy Richards, Stained Glass
Our October meeting will be after church on Sunday, October 2nd and men are also welcome to hear Nancy Richards give us some of her vast knowledge about stained glass. She has been working with and selling stained glass for many years.

Service of Commitment and Celebration on Sunday, October 16, 2016
Our most exciting event will happen on Sunday, October 16th during our regular service. We will all take part in a service of Commitment and Celebration for Reorganized units of UMW. This will mark our official entrance into the national UMW. Our Pittsburgh District president, Pam Konopasek, and Conference UMW president, Diane Miller, will be present to help us celebrate.

Guest Speaker on Saturday, November 5, 2016 - Caitlin Werth, Women in Allegheny Jail
On Saturday, November 5 at 10:00am Caitlin Werth, who is Chaplin and Program Director of Foundation of Hope, will be here to tell us about her work with women in the Allegheny County Jail. This is a segment of the population often forgotten but one in which women should be informed. Perhaps there is some way our unit can become involved when we become more informed.

This is only the beginning of our journey together. Ladies, please stay tuned and join us when you are able. We would love to welcome you to learn more about this wonderful organization.

Ugly Quilt Project (Sleeping Bag Ministry) 2016 Season Is Starting On Monday, September 12

The sleeping bag ministry will begin its 2016 season on Monday, September 12 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. We gather in the basement (Fellowship Hall) of Calvary UMC at 6:00pm, share a meal, and get to work by 6:30pm. The sleeping bags are made from recycled materials, stuffed with personal items such as toothpaste, shampoo, hats and gloves then distributed to nearby homeless shelters. The team is also working on plastic mats made from plastic grocery bags, so you can see there is plenty to do. No sewing experience needed; if you can tie a knot, you can make a sleeping bag! Please consider joining us on Monday evenings. Questions? Please contact Lynn Sevick at lynnsevick@mac.com or Joan Bradley at ogremtb@aol.com. Thank you!

Old Blankets Needed
We are in need of old blankets that can be recycled into sleeping bags for the homeless. Please consider
donating old blankets to our project. Please see Lynn Sevick if you have any questions.

Plastic Bags Needed
We are in need of plastic bags that can be crocheted into mats for sleeping bags for the homeless. 500 to 700 plastic bags are needed for each mat. Please bring them to the church.

Crocheters Needed to Make Sleep Mats for the Sleeping Bags
The group that makes the quilts for the homeless is looking for persons who are able to crochet. There are directions for using the plastic grocery bags to crochet a plastic mat which keeps the quilts off the ground keeping the quilt drier. There are already rolls of "plastic yarn" ready to be used and needles are available. If you can crochet or want to learn please contact Joan Bradley. We would love to give a plastic mat with every quilt but are in desperate need of persons who crochet.

Vacation Bible School 2016

A Heartfelt Thank you!
As you are probably aware, Calvary held its Vacation Bible School program in August for the children of this church as well as children of our extended family and surrounding communities. We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all of the volunteers who came and gave their time, and also to everyone that contributed in some way to make this year’s VBS program a success. Also, a special word of thanks to Liz Martinez for bringing her special gifts to Calvary’s children programs.

6th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along Concert
Saturday, December 3 at 4:00pm

All are invited to raise their voices together in a classic holiday choral work during the 6th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along at Calvary United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 3rd at 4:00pm.

The performance is a community "sing-along," with professional soloists, an orchestra, and an amateur chorus. The annual concert started five years ago out of a desire to provide the Northside community with a sing-along rendition of Handel's most beloved work, "Messiah". The sing-along was founded on a principle of openness - everyone is welcome in the choir, and everyone is welcome in the performance. As an audience member you are not required to sing, but you are certainly invited to sing.

This holiday tradition now brings up to 400 people to Calvary UMC to sing selected choruses including the famous "Hallelujah Chorus". Audience members are asked to bring 1-pound non-perishable food items for the pantry at Northside Common Ministries. In addition, we ask you to bring reusable tote-bags (you know, those give-away totes we all collect for grocery shopping, etc.) These are needed for those who use the pantry and are, of course, better for God's earth than plastic bags. Cookie reception with the artists follows in the Victorian Chapel. It's a fantastic way to kick off the holiday season, and we invite everyone to join and sing for the joy of it!
