What is needed to help make VBS a success?

We will be transforming the church into a forest, which will require some help from the congregation. Please bring in any and all:
  • Artificial trees/plants (Christmas trees or any other kind)
  • Tents
  • Picnic baskets
  • Waste baskets/recycling baskets

We are supplying every camper with a backpack full of school supplies. We would appreciate any donation of:
  • Pencils
  • Solid colored spiral notebooks
  • Solid colored pocket folder
  • Notecards
  • Crayons
  • Coloring books (for campers who aren’t in school yet)
  • Individual sheets of stickers (for campers who aren’t in school yet)

Any VBS supplies can be dropped off in the Sunday School room. Thank you for all of your support and help throughout this whole process. Together, we can make this VBS a great success and help our community by bringing children closer to Christ.

UMCOR Requests Cleaning Buckets and Health Kits for Flooding Victims in West Virginia

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) asked for prayers for residents of West Virginia impacted by severe weather and flash flooding since late last week, and who remained vulnerable to new flooding yesterday. What we can do to help is assemble cleaning buckets and health kits, which can be used for this and other disasters. These supplies enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood or hurricane.

The approximate cost to complete a bucket is $65. Please bring the completed buckets to Calvary.

Cleaning Bucket Materials
  • 5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
    • Buckets from fast-food restaurants or bakeries can be used if washed and cleaned;
    • Do not use buckets that have stored chemicals such as paint or pool cleaner;
    • Advertisements on the outside are acceptable.
  • Liquid laundry detergent
    • One 50-oz. or two 25-oz. bottle(s) only.
  • Liquid household cleaner
    • 12‐16 oz. liquid cleaner that can be mixed with water;
    • No spray cleaners.
  • Dish soap
    • 16‐28 oz. bottle any brand.
  • 1 can air freshener
    • Aerosol or pump.
  • 1 insect repellant spray
    • 6‐14 oz. aerosol or spray pump with protective cover.
  • 1 scrub brush
    • Plastic or wooden handle.
  • 18 cleaning wipes
    • Handi Wipes or reusable wipes;
    • No terry cleaning towels;
    • Remove from packaging.
  • 7 sponges
    • No cellulose sponges due to mold issues;
    • Remove from wrapper.
  • 5 scouring pads
    • Remove from wrapper;
    • No stainless steel, Brillo pads, or SOS pads (nothing with soap built in).
  • 50 clothespins
  • Clothesline
    • One 100-ft. or two 50-ft. lines;
    • Cotton or plastic.
  • 24-roll heavy-duty trash bags
    • 33‐ to 45-gallon sizes;
    • Remove from the box.
  • 5 dust masks
  • 2 pairs kitchen dishwashing gloves
    • Should be durable enough for multiple uses;
    • Remove from packaging.
  • 1 pair work gloves
    • Cotton with leather palm or all leather.

Assembly Directions

Place all liquid items in the bucket first. Place remaining items in the bucket, fitting them around and between the liquid items. Sponges, scouring pads, clothespins, and trash bags can be separated in order to fit all of the items in the bucket. Ensure the lid is closed securely.

Important Notes
  • All items must be new except for the actual bucket and lid.
  • All cleaning agents must be liquid and in plastic containers. No powders, please.
  • If you cannot find the requested size of a liquid item, use a smaller size. Including larger sizes of any item will prevent the lid from sealing.
  • If all of the items on the list are not included, please put a label on the bucket indicating what has been omitted.
  • Cleaning buckets are only used within the United States. They are not opened to verify the contents unless there is indication that some items have been omitted.

December 2016

6th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along Concert
Saturday, December 3 at 4:00pm

All are invited to raise their voices together in a classic holiday choral work during the 6th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along at Calvary United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 3rd at 4:00pm.

The performance is a community "sing-along," with professional soloists, an orchestra, and an amateur chorus. The annual concert started five years ago out of a desire to provide the Northside community with a sing-along rendition of Handel's most beloved work, "Messiah". The sing-along was founded on a principle of openness - everyone is welcome in the choir, and everyone is welcome in the performance. As an audience member you are not required to sing, but you are certainly invited to sing.

This holiday tradition now brings up to 400 people to Calvary UMC to sing selected choruses including the famous "Hallelujah Chorus". Audience members are asked to bring 1-pound non-perishable food items for the pantry at Northside Common Ministries. In addition, we ask you to bring reusable tote-bags (you know, those give-away totes we all collect for grocery shopping, etc.) These are needed for those who use the pantry and are, of course, better for God's earth than plastic bags. Cookie reception with the artists follows in the Victorian Chapel. It's a fantastic way to kick off the holiday season, and we invite everyone to join and sing for the joy of it!
