Monthly Newsletter

The Calvary Website Has a New Design!

Calvary United Methodist Church is proud to announce the relaunch of our website with a new design!

This improved design will allow Calvary to better inform, educate, and communicate with its members and visitors as well as offer a full set of new features to explore online.

New features include a Church Calendar, and Contact and Location sections.

The Church Calendar will always contain a current schedule of the meetings, events, and services happenning at Calvary. The calendar is divided into three types of entries: 1) Services - orange in color, 2) Meetings - blue in color, and 3) Events - green in color. By clicking on a listing you can see all of the details - time, location, description, etc. There are also different calendar views available - day, week, month - for ease of browsing and reading.

The new Contact section is a form that will allow visitors to easily email the church, or member of church staff, directly from the website.

The new Location section is a Google map that shows the location of the church that also allows visitors to easily map their route to Calvary.

You will also find that the Monthly Newsletter will begin to be slimmed down. The newsletter will have links that will redirect you to the Calvary website where the main content of announcements will be located.

Further updates and changes to the new website will be occurring over the upcoming months as the content and design are fine-tuned.

Features that will be added over the upcoming months include an interactive form for wedding requests, and also a unique gallery of photos showcasing all of the beautiful features of our historical church.

The new design of the website was developed by a member of Calvary's own congregation, Michael W. Hallman, who is also an active member of the choir. Michael volunteered countless hours to this project and is one of Calvary's many church volunteers who often give of their energy, skills, gifts, and time because they are passionate about the mission of our church. Thank you, Michael, for sharing your gift with Calvary!

Please check out the new website! It is at the same location, it just has a new look!

Wednesday Night Bible Study

Wednesday Night Bible Study started back up for the season October 28th at 6:15pm and we are studying "Covenant".

"Covenant" is an in-depth group bible study in which people read and discuss the Bible together. The multiple week program discusses books from both testaments-showcasing the interconnectedness of scripture as a whole while demonstrating how the covenant relationship between God and people is woven through the entire Bible.

Each session includes a thought-provoking video conversation between biblical scholars that serves as an impetus for further discussion and contemplation among the group members.

The belief that it is through conversation together-through community-that we can best discover the Bible’s transformative power. We are planning to have a number of guests from other faiths sharing our common heritage of the Old Testament.

United Methodist Women Brunch

A Message from Joan Bradley

United Methodist Women had a great first gathering. For our next meeting we have been invited to the parsonage for a brunch on Saturday, November 7th beginning at 10:00am. ALL women who are interested in making United Methodist Women part of Calvary again are welcome to attend this gathering. Please come and help begin the journey of UMW at Calvary.

Cranberry Sauce Collection

A Message from the Missions Committee

Calvary UMC has been asked to collect cans of cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving baskets that will be distributed to area families by local pastors through Light of Life. We need 200 cans to be delivered to Light of Life on Friday, November 20th, 2015. Calvary has been very generous in past years and we have been able to easily reach this goal. Thank you in advance for taking the time to bless our North Side and Homewood neighbors. Questions? Please see Joan and Myles Bradley, or Lynn Sevick.

"The Way - Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus"

Rev. Ellie Laws

Have you ever wanted to visit the Holy Lands? Adam Hamilton takes us on a six week tour of the Holy Lands as we walk in the footsteps of Jesus. We will begin at the Jordan River and follow in the footsteps of Jesus all the way to the cross. Reading the book "The Way" we will gain insight on the life of Jesus.

Please contact Rev. Ellie Laws if you would like to join this Bible Study Group. There are two studies available. A donation of $10.00 is requested for each book.

Wednesday mornings at 10:00am beginning September 30th

Thursday evenings at 6:30pm beginning October 1st
Watch a preview of "The Way - Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus"

Travel with Adam Hamilton as he retraces the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Using historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith, Hamilton follows in the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought.

Old Blankets Needed for the Ugly Quilt Project

Lynn Sevick

The Ugly Quilt Project is underway! We are in need of old blankets that can be recycled into sleeping bags for the homeless. Please consider donating old blankets to our project. Please see Lynn Sevick if you have any questions.

Crocheted Sleep Mats for the Homeless

Joan Bradley

Now that the UGLY QUILT PROJECT has begun again, it’s time to make our outreach to the homeless even better.  In order to provide a cushion and air space under the quilt, we need volunteers who know how to (or are willing to learn how to) crochet.  Recycled plastic grocery bags and a little spare time can provide this useful addition to the Ugly Quilts.  (We’re told that this is a perfect ‘TV watching’ activity.)  Also, if you have bags, please bring them to church – we’ll have a box for the collection.  If you are interested, here are the directions:

Instructions on How to Make the Sleep Mats

You will need approximately 500 plastic grocery bags for each mat.
You will need a crochet hook, size M or larger.
Finished size is 24 X 72 inches.

TO MAKE THE “YARN” smooth out the grocery bag, fold it in half lengthwise twice
and cut off seamed bottom and top handles/hanging tabs. Fold in half and cut across,
repeat. This will give you 4 loops. Take a loop and insert another loop, then bring the
rest through to attach (remember how you strung rubber bands together as a child?).
Repeat then wind your “string” of connected loops into a ball. Don’t make the ball too
big to handle. I usually work with one full bag of grocery bags and make three or four
balls out of it then repeat until I run out of bags.

TO MAKE THE MAT chain 72 inches using the doubled looped strands of grocery bags.
Single crochet until the mat is 24 inches wide.

TO MAKE A CARRYING STRAP chain a length long enough to go around the rolled
mat and slide on, connect that chain into a loop with a single crochet then chain a length
long enough to cross your back, go over your shoulder and reach the other end of the mat.
Chain an additional length equal to the first loop and attach with a single crochet.

YOUR SLEEPING MAT IS NOW READY TO GIVE AWAY. YouTube videos are
online for viewing. Just google “sleeping mats for the homeless”.

5th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along Concert

All are invited to raise their voices together in a classic holiday choral work during the 5th Annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along at Calvary United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 5th at 4:00pm. Calvary's Music Director Brian Burns will once again be conducting this year's concert along with David Bridge on the organ and chamber orchestra.

The performance is a community "sing-along," with professional soloists, an orchestra, and an amateur chorus. The annual concert started five years ago out of a desire to provide the Northside community with a sing-along rendition of Handel's most beloved work, "Messiah". The sing-along was founded on a principle of openness - everyone is welcome in the choir, and everyone is welcome in the performance. As an audience member you are not required to sing, but you are certainly invited to sing.

This holiday tradition now brings up to 400 people to Calvary UMC to sing selected choruses including the famous "Hallelujah Chorus". No audition is required to sing, just join the rehearsals listed below. Audience members are asked to bring 1-pound non-perishable food items for the pantry at Northside Common Ministries. Cookie reception with the artists follows in the Victorian Chapel. It's a fantastic way to kick off the holiday season, and we invite everyone to join and sing for the joy of it!

Soloists
Anna Singer, Soprano
Mary Beth Sederburg, Alto
Christopher Quigley, Tenor
Matthew Hunt, Baritone

Festival Choir Choruses

- John 21:15-19

Sponsors are needed for upcoming months thru the end of the year.

For only $70 you, or a group, can provide a light lunch to the people you worship with. Sponsors are responsible for serving the meal and cleaning up the Fellowship Hall and kitchen once the meal is over. The total sponsorship cost is $70. A group can divide the cost among themselves anyway they choose.

If you, or a group, would like to sponsor a fellowship luncheon, the below forms are available next to the Sunday bulletin for you to fill out. Once you have completed the reverse side of the form with all of the required information, please place the form along with the $70 in an offering envelope. You can then place the envelope in the offering plate.

You can also email the required information on the below form to calvaryumcpgh@gmail.com and instructions on sponsorship payment will be emailed to you.

Calvary Water Bottles Now On Sale!

A Message from the Children & Youth Committee

During VBS this year, all of the children and volunteers were given a Calvary water bottle. During the upcoming weeks, the Children and Youth Committee will be selling the remaining water bottles as a fundraiser to raise money for the Fall Festival and the Children’s Christmas Party. The water bottles will be raising funds in two different ways. Not to mention that it's also a healthy fundraiser! So how does it raise money in two ways? The first way is the obvious - through the sale of the water bottles! The second way is through advertising on the bottles. We have the Calvary logo on the bottle and wherever those bottles go; Calvary will be promoted!

The water bottles will be on sale for only $3.00 or 2 for $5.00. They will be available in the Chapel before Sunday morning worship and also during fellowship time in the Fellowship Hall. This is an exciting time for Calvary! The number of children in our church is growing. Please help the Children and Youth Committee continue to provide our children with amazing programs!

On Sale Now for Only $3.00 Each or 2 for $5.00

“Let There Be Light” Campaign

Calvary recently enhanced the lighting in the Sanctuary, Chapel & Vestibule, and the total cost was $26,000. We are having a campaign to raise money to cover the cost of this project. An anonymous donor has offered to match every dollar donated up to $13,000. We have raised a little over $8,000 to date so we have about $5,000 to go. If you are able to donate to this campaign, please indicate “Lighting” on the offering envelope.

The Daily Bread

Calvary Sponsors The Daily Bread at New Hope every 2nd Thursday of each and every month. If you are interested in helping physically or financially please let us know. It can be a group project or an individual donation of time; we are always looking for help. If you are interested in helping please call Audrey Jennings at 412.335.3559 or email her at audreyjennings037@yahoo.com.
