How to Really Piss Off a Yoga Teacher

One thing students say repeatedly is how yoga helps them stay mindful and focused on living as healthfully as they can.

This choice of a "yoga lifestyle" has less to do with the absolutes: you must be this way or that in order to practice yoga or benefit from it. A yoga lifestyle includes fueling your body and mind with whole foods, choosing self-care methods that add to your wellness, and expanding your mind with positive opportunities.

Do these things 85% of the time, and the occasional wine and pizza won't matter.
Movement Happenings!

Mark your calendars for the Central Iowa Yoga Retreat, scheduled for Saturday, April 4th. You can choose from half-day and full-day activities, and lunch is available for registrants. Always an interesting mix of instructors and classes. Follow the organizers' Facebook page for upcoming registration details.

Yoga in the Garden yoga events are held on various days and times at the Des Moines Botanical Center this winter. Always best to register and pay for classes in advance, as walk-in availability is limited. Go to the event page for more information and cost.

Meditation Happenings (and other cool things)
Dennis Kelly's Meditation Around Town has changed day, time, and location! However, the usual format of a different meditation facilitator remains the same: each month, you can experience a different style of meditation, which is super cool.

All sessions, which are free, happen at Pure Land of Iowa in Clive on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. For a complete listing of facilitators, visit the Meditation Around Town website. (And hey! I'll lead meditation on Tuesday, April 14th, so come om with me!)

Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Center in Hiawatha (just outside of Cedar Rapids) hosts a "Sweat Lodge (Inipi) Ceremony" January 18th, "Drumming for Healing" on January 27th, "Forest Bathing with the Seasons" on January 31st, and "Taiji, Tea, and Qi Retreat" February 7th-February 9th, plus many other interesting events! Costs vary for the weekend event depending on if you'll stay onsite or commute. Learn more.

Experience a "sound shower" with biofield tuning by Carlyn Marron, which includes tuning forks and singing bowls. The class is usually held every Monday morning in January and February at Inner Space in Des Moines. Also look at the calendar to find Super Soul Sound Baths with Kate Coppola, and sound baths with Hannah Rush.

Consider experiencing a gong bath as meditation! Deb Jennings and Sounds for the Soul offers a number of sound therapy happenings each month featuring many different players and experiences. For information about location, cost, days, full moon/new moon events in January and February, and chances to learn how to play gong, visit Deb's site.

The Des Moines Meditation Group offers a weekly free meditation sitting each Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Friends Meeting House, 4211 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. The website appears to be updated with other events, too.
Private Sessions
Although my primary class offerings are in corporate settings, I still teach many private sessions, and appreciate this opportunity! Many people love the direct guidance and attention of personalized yoga sessions. This is a more custom experience to expand a home practice, address specific goals, continue recovery from an injury, or experience in-depth instruction outside of class. Personalized sequences are developed so you can follow a path of your design.

I meet with clients in their homes or at the Des Moines Public Library Central Campus. If you or someone you know desires this type of personal attention, please reach out for more information.

Reminder for Des Moines Public Schools Teachers and Employees!
So glad to have both locations and days active and humming! This is just a reminder that if you're not getting emails from Tracey Kelley Yoga to learn about class schedules, times, and other important information, make sure to check your "Junk" folder, then approve "Never Block Sender" and "Never Block Domain Name." I believe you can also put my email address on an approved list in your Outlook. Please remember: while I don't communicate through email more than once or twice a month, it's the only way I notify participants of upcoming classes,or session changes due to inclement weather or illness. Thank you!

Ready for a Personal Consultation?
Let's plan on making a phone date for your updated consultations! These usually last about 30 minutes if I have one on file for you already, and 60 minutes if you're new to any corporate program.

Do Healthy Changes Really Matter?

Oh yes! From drinking more water and reducing sugar to doing yoga and getting enough sleep, small changes add up to big benefits!

What to Know About Yoga: Books

Reading about yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and other healthy living aspects is always time well spent. Depending on how much of a deep dive you want to take, you can explore concepts, learn new approaches, and simply settle into a routine of self-study and reflection.

My blog (linkety above) is always full of book recommendations, but here are four books that help you get started with the topics above:

"Any yogi could meditate in a dark room lit with candles and incense. But could you meditate at the dentist?" Do Your Om Thing: Bending Yoga Tradition to Fit Your Modern Life by Rebecca Pacheco

"The goal is not to clear your mind but to focus your mind--for a few nanoseconds at a time--and whenever you become distracted, just start again." Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-To Book by Dan Harris and Jeff Warren

"Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally." Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness by Jon Kabat-Zinn

"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering...." Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach
