 Commodore's Corner


I’ve been away so long, I am not sure that anything I write for this Newsletter will have any relativity to what’s happening at the club. I’ll let you decide!
I have heard that while attendance is off somewhat due to the terrible weather the events that have been held have been just fine and did not lose any money; that’s great news!  Mother Nature sure is an unbelievable force to be reckoned with, isn’t she?
Sometimes I long for those “toasty” summer days and a long drink of iced tea!  Funny how that works, when it’s hot we want some cool weather when it’s cool we think hot; I don’t know.  I can remember as a kid, laying in the grass next to a farm pond, listening to the frogs and insects, smelling the grass (real grass, not Colorado grass) and dirt from the fields and thinking that idyllic times would never end but they do. And soon this harsh winter will pass as well, spring will be with us and it will get “Chesapeake” hot again. That’s one of the beauties of the area that we live and play in, those seasonal changes are pretty nice, I think!
Time passes and passes quickly!
On that note, I want to take just a moment from my usual light banter and remember Pat O’Connell. Pat was a friend and mentor in his vibrant days not that many years ago.  He was on the YC BoD’s when I joined the Board and always had a friendly word for me. He was like Justice Tomas on the US Supreme court, never said much but relished his vote and in quiet conversation pushed the decisions of the board in a positive direction.  Pat also took care of our club property and pool doing an excellent job at both.  I can recall his big Egg Harbor at the dock.  On any given summer weekday when I needed to ask a question or just wanted to sit and listen to some folks I would jump on board have a beer and enjoy an hour or two with some of the “older” guys, it was great.  I will miss those days!
For those of you who are newer to our club you will have different memories but most will recall always seeing Pat sitting at the Log Canoe lounge sipping his virgin Bloody Mary along with having a sandwich in a familiar and safe place.
So long Pat, I trust you find yourself sitting on your boat enjoying a beer with the people you want to be with for all eternity!
On a happier note, I will be returning to Rock Hall in early March, (yes that’s a happy note for me anyway.) By then the weather should be just about perfect for a Chesapeake Spring and the company at the club will warm me up a bit if need be!
Keep an eye out for the coming Social events, stay warm and dry, find something good to enjoy every day, and I’ll see you at the club!

Summer is for Sailing!
Our sailing school is busy this time of year working on boats, hiring instructors, and getting ready for the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser coming up on March 28! But we all are looking forward to being out on the water and feeling the wind in our sails and the warm sun on our backs. Think about summer now and get yourself, your kids, and your grandchildren signed up for sailing.  Our programs are on the RHYCSS website and on brochures in the clubhouse and around town. Pies and Patrons were Plentiful at National Pie Day Celebration
Members and their guests turned out for National Pie Day on Friday, January 23.
Phat Party - Mardi Gras Celebration at RHYC 
The RHYC was transformed for the Mardi Gras Party held on Saturday, February 14. Despite blizzard conditions members braved the elements to celebrate New Orleans style.

7th Annual Spaghetti Dinner Benefit
Saturday, March 28
Harry's Famous Meatballs and Sock Burning!

The RHYC Sailing School will serve its 7th Annual Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Rock Hall Yacht Club.
On the menu we have: Spaghetti & Harry Murphey's famous homemade meatballs & sauce, mixed greens salad, garlic bread, iced tea, and dessert. There are two seatings this year, 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Take-out is offered too. The price for adults is $12 each, and the price for children under the age of 12 is $6 each. The proceeds from the event are used by RHYC Sailing School (RHYCSS) for equipment purchases and sailing scholarships. 

The Junior Sailors of RHYCSS will serve you a great meal - please encourage your extended family, friends and neighbors to support youth sailing!
We welcome the community to enjoy all the festivities!

Following dinner, join us for sock burning festivities at approximately 8:00 pm to celebrate spring and bare feet being just around the corner!  Bring an old pair of socks to burn if you'd like. We'll also be collecting new socks to benefit those in need in Rock Hall and surrounding communities, so please bring a pack of socks and donate them when you check in for dinner.  

It’s a really fun evening, we hope you come out to enjoy a fabulous Italian meal, support RHYCSS, and meet our junior sailors!  Reservations can be made online or via email or phone 410-775-8225.

Sign Up to Share in Rebirth of History
The Rock Hall Town Museum committee has found two antique sailboats that were originally built in Rock Hall and raced at the RHYC.  This 16-foot One Design boat is called a “Cricket Class." Cat rigged with a Marconi sail plan, the vessel has a deck with a cockpit and runs a centerboard.
The Museum is interested in taking on these craft to be restored -- with a long term goal of having the two boats race each other in exhibition.
To accomplish this goal we need to create a restoration committee willing to work and learn small boat restoration. The Museum staff will help out and offer guidance and the committee will have the full support of the RHYC as well.
It would be pretty nice to share this restoration project with the town of Rock Hall and build on our YC’s tradition.
