Now Hear This!

 Commodore's Corner

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! We certainly did, visiting our daughter and her family, and returned pleasantly exhausted after 4 days with three little boys!
Well, summer is in full swing and a lot of you are coming out to enjoy the pool and good times on the deck. It has become apparent that the attendance on Friday nights has decreased. Friday has historically been a very popular opportunity to socialize with friends and catch up with those we have not seen for a while. A number of us have been pondering this and have not been able to come up with the reason why. Is it the menu? We have encouraged members to suggest “Specials” that they would like to see on the menu and have received some good input. Please keep them coming. Is it the weather? There have been some Friday evenings that were not very pleasant. Maybe members are just busy with other things this time of year. Whatever the reason, it is a challenge to maintain those Club amenities that do not have enough members coming out to participate. We encourage you to let us know what if anything you would like us to do differently. We are always open to new ideas.
Our Regatta Season got off to a great start with a very successful One Design Regatta and Down River Race. Thanks to the Regatta Committee, the many volunteers and Mike and the staff for making it such a great weekend for everyone involved. The Junior One Design had 75 boats participating this year and was also very successful. It is very nice to see so many young sailors, both members and visitors, come out and carry on this sailing tradition. A big thanks to the Sailing School and all the volunteers for all the time and effort it took to put on this very important event.
I would like to welcome all of our new members who joined during our membership drive in May & June and also those members who joined earlier in the year. Please mark your calendars for our Welcome Aboard Party on August 6th. Our membership committee has a wonderful evening planned, details will be published soon. We are thrilled you have chosen to be part of our wonderful Club and we look forward to seeing you participate in lots of the events, social or boating. If you have any suggestions you would like to share with us we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you have new ideas for social events or would like to join a committee. Getting involved is an excellent way to meet other members and an opportunity to make new friends. Contact info for the board and committees is available on the RHYC website.
To all our members old and new (of course no reference to age is inferred, we are all young at heart!) please come out and support your Club!

Waterfront activities contribute significantly to the quality of Club Membership and also serve as a powerful tool for attracting new members to the Club. Put the best methods of grant writing to use to maximize our efforts.
If you have grant writing experience – Awesome! If not, and you have a Bachelor's Degree in English or experience in Marketing and Communications you may be a prospective grant writer in the rough. Do you think critically and have an eye for detail? If any of these describe you – Great!

Pool Sessions for Adults Only

A number of members have requested that a time be set aside for adults to use the pool for fitness sessions. As of Tuesday July 12, the pool will be open 7 days a week from 8 am to 10 am for adult swims only. The exception will be for a short period of use by the Sailing School on Mondays. All members who use the pool during the adult swim time are required to sign the pool register daily so usage can be tracked. The pool will continue to be open from 10 am onwards for all members.  Please do not bring children into the pool area prior to 10am even if there are no adults in the pool.
A Reminder...
The pool is sparkling and members are taking advantage of the summer days.  To insure the pool experience is a good one for ALL members, and as a refresher, the following highlighted rules will keep the pool safe and healthy.
  • All members are to sign in and include guest information in the log found in the yellow box in the pool deck area.
  • Children under age 12 must be accompanied by a member parent.
  • Adults and accompanied minors may bring food and drink into the pool deck area, in non-glass/ceramic containers, but not in the pool itself.
  • Rough games, horse play and running in or around the pool are not permitted.
  • All swimmers are required to shower before entering the pool.
  • Children not yet toilet trained must wear a swim diaper in the pool.  If a toilet accident happens or is discovered by RHYC personnel, the pool will be CLOSED.  Department of Health protocol will be followed to remedy the occurrence resulting in a pool closure of up to 16 hours.
A copy of the complete pool rules is in the guest log book or can be found on our website here.

Thank you, the Pool Committee.

2016 Log Canoe Regatta
Over the weekend of July 16 and 17th, the Rock Hall Yacht Club hosted races for the Bay's historic log canoes on the Chester River. These magnificent boats are unique to the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake, dating back to the early 1900s.

Eight of the remaining 22 boats participated, sailing under sunny skies with favorable winds. Despite the heat, the races were a success. At the conclusion on Sunday, many of the crews returned to the RHYC for Dark and Stormies, the sailors' traditional celebratory beverage, and the awarding of trophies. The tradition lives on!

Food and Bar

Mike and his staff work very hard to keep things running as smoothly as possible for us.   Sometimes the wait for a drink or dinner may be longer than we would like.  If you can make a reservation, that will help with the planning of bringing on extra staff to help alleviate this problem.

If there are any specials that you would like to see on the menu board, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your ideas at It is always nice to have new meal options.

Junior One-Design Regatta
On Thursday, June 30, 2016, 97 junior sailors in Optis, Laser Radials and C420s competed in the Annual Junior One-Design Regatta at Rock Hall Yacht Club. It was a fantastic summer day starting with light winds, but building enough to get at least three races in on all 3 courses. Our RHYCSS Racing team did very well!
Max Penders and Wade Anthony came in 1st place out of 8 boats in C420s!

In Laser Radials, Noah Macielag placed 6th, David Manley placed 8th, Kiki Harris placed 11th, and Kai Tsurumaki placed 15th.

And in Opti Green Lucien Pelsinski earned 3rd place.
We are so proud of all the sailors that represent RHYC on the Chesapeake Bay! Results are available on our website here.
Also a big thank you to all the terrific volunteers that helped make the day a success. Our club received so many wonderful compliments from parents, coaches, and teams during the Junior Regatta. It's a pleasure to foster the future of junior sailing!
Club Racing Results July 3
The weather on Sunday was partly cloudy, with a light wind from the SSE. The wind velocity was highly variable, providing additional challenges.  Sometimes it was stronger on the right hand side of the course; sometimes on the left. Skippers making the wrong choice (guess!) paid the price.  But that is all a part of sailing. A good time was had by all
*Windmill 5255 had a rigging failure in Race 3 and retired.

A Reminder to All Members

Using the Club's Boat Lift and Floating Dock
Boat Lift

Keeping our boat lifts operational is all of our responsibilty. To keep these operating for all club members to enjoy, please observe the following:

1 – After use, secure the trolley only to the lift pole and tie the boom to the piling.
2 – Do not allow children to use the boat lift; it is not a toy.
3 – Do not walk under a boat while it is in the air.
4 – Do not to block the boat lift.  When you are done, please move your trailer so others can use it.

Floating dock
Please remember that no boat shall be tied to the floating dock long term or overnight. Doing this impedes other boaters from using the boat lift. The floating dock is for short term use while loading and off-loading only.

For more information, please refer to the club rules and posted sign at the dock.

Thank you.

Club Racing
You don't sail? Sail, but don't race? Enjoy being out on the water? Then you can have it all as a part of club racing. It’s low-key, fun, and simple. Races are held right on Lankford Bay just off the club beach and docks with the first warning gun at noon. Every race needs a committee boat or two, to set marks and keep score. The sailors rotate the duty, but always need an extra hand or two. Boats are available to borrow from the sailing school with advanced notice. We hope to see all the "old" club racers out there as well as a bunch of new sailors and volunteers. Find our entire club racing schedule and results online on our website.
