 Commodore's Corner

Spring is finally here, flowers and trees are blooming and oh yes pollen is in the air. It is bittersweet when the weather turns nice enough to fling open all the windows and blow out the stale winter air, but within a short time every flat surface in the house is covered in a yellow powder. Oh well that too will pass!
Thanks to our wonderful Social Committee and our staff, we had a lovely Easter Brunch and the children enjoyed the Easter Egg Hunt once again. Patrick & I were very happy to have our daughter and her family with us this year. Our little grandsons just love RHYC. Whenever they visit, no matter what time of year, no matter the weather, when I ask them “What should we do today?” they always reply “Go to the Club!” Enjoying the Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday was icing on the cake for them.
The St Patrick’s Day Party was also a great success and as usual Diane Atlas did a good job stumping us with her quiz. Thank you to the Social Committee & staff and to Diane for chairing the event.

Our membership drive is ongoing and we really encourage our members to bring their friends and neighbors along to the Club to introduce them to all that we have to offer. Guest Night on April 23rd would be a fine time to introduce a prospective member but any time works too.
Our hardworking committees continue to strike things off the to do list. Thank you to Dennis Staples for bringing in his crew to shampoo our carpets, they look so much better. Great job Dennis!  The compressor for the walk in freezer is being replaced, we were in grave danger of losing a lot of frozen food in the summer, due to the current compressor’s limitations. Thank you to Scott Ranney for finding us a very well-priced replacement Kegger for behind the bar. The one we had was leaking and could have caused us a myriad of problems. There are many other issues with our facility that are being addressed and I will keep you up to date as we go along. Please mark your calendars for clean-up day on April 30th, many hands make light work and it is an excellent way to meet fellow members.
I do have to say, I am so grateful for the many committee chairs and members who have given their time and effort to research and investigate every item we have replaced, to make sure we are getting the best price for everything. Not only physical items, but overheads as well. They have not only improved the Club this year but have saved us a lot of money doing it. Thank you to them all.
Welcome back to our members returning from their winter months in Florida and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Club soon.

Windmill Sailors Represented RHYC in Recent Florida Regattas!

In a highly competitive 16 boat Windmill Midwinters at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center March 12-13, Ralph & Sandy Sponar placed 4th overall while Allen & Christina Chauvenet were 6th. Winds were very strong but 6 races were completed--5 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday. Only 6 of the 16 entrants completed all 6 races without capsizing at least once--but both the Sponars and the Chauvenets were skillfully able to avoid this fate!

March 19-20 saw 8 Windmills (one of the larger fleets) at the Saratoga Sailing Squadron One Design Midwinters. Allen Chauvenet (with Sarah Steward from the Hoover YC in Ohio) placed 4th while the Sponars were 6th. That doesn't tell the whole story since the racing was so close that 1 point separated 3rd from 6th with 4-5-6 all determined by tie-breaking. There were no races on Saturday due to severe thunderstorms so all 5 races were sailed on a Sunday where the start time was moved up from 10:30 to 9:30 in order to make 5 races possible. This event drew a number of boats from states well north of FL but in the Windmill Class the Sponar & Chauvenet boats were the only out of state entries.

2016 Membership Drive is Under Way
The foundation of the Rock Hall Yacht Club (RHYC) is its membership!  From young families to retired couples, to singles, RHYC has a diverse group of individuals that comprise its family.  Without this group, none of the exciting activities, friendship and “memory-making” would occur.

As you know,  when you become a member of the RHYC you are opening the door to many fun experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime as well as many benefits and programs designed to add value to your membership.

It’s a really fun evening, we hope you come out to enjoy a fabulous Italian meal, support RHYCSS, and meet our junior sailors!   Reservations for the Spaghetti Dinner can be made online or via email or phone 410-775-8225.
Easter Brunch

Family and friends gathering, an abundance of delicious foods, smiling faces, happy children hunting and running through the pines, sweet treats and beautiful flowers equals a speculator day at RHYC enjoying Easter Brunch.

We look forward to our next Club dinner on Friday evening April 29th, when we will celebrate National Shrimp Scampi and Arbor Day.

We will celebrate with, you guessed it, Shrimp Scampi and trees.

Come join us for fellowship and another fun experience.

The Rock Hall Yacht Club Technology Committee is working on a new, mobile friendly, modern website which should be launched before summer. Please continue to use our existing site in the interim. Our current site was put in place in 2008, so it's time for an overhaul!

We need your favorite 3 high resolution photographs of the club - grounds, views, regattas, events, people having fun at RHYC.

Your photographs can be emailed to or email us and let us know how to access them. We'd also like your permission to use them on our site without attribution.  Thanks!

Club Racing
You don't sail? Sail, but don't race? Enjoy being out on the water? Then you can have it all as a part of club racing. It’s low-key, fun, and simple. Races are held right on Lankford Bay just off the club beach and docks with the first warning gun at noon. Every race needs a committee boat or two, to set marks and keep score. The sailors rotate the duty, but always need an extra hand or two. Boats are available to borrow from the sailing school with advanced notice. We hope to see all the "old" club racers out there as well as a bunch of new sailors and volunteers. Find our entire club racing schedule and results online on our website.
