 Commodore's Corner

The economy must be improving all over the Mid-Atlantic; how do I know this? Two of RHYC’s Board of Directors members had to step down due to heavy demands on their time from their businesses.  Emil Kiss and Jack Butler have both been on our management team for a number of years and their contribution to the club’s success is duly noted. They will be missed! That’s the bad news. The good news is we have already found one new board member, Gary Cohen.  Gary brings a wealth of experience in both general business and specifically the Marine business, having owned marinas in both NJ and Florida; welcome aboard!  The other good news is, for now, one seat is still available; any takers?
Our staff continues to do a great job of adjusting to the volume of members using the club this winter. The food and bar service is still functioning well. Financially we are doing OK, thanks in large part to a steady flow of members looking to shake their cabin fever and enjoy a good meal with friends!
The other day I had a discussion with a member that “flipped a switch” in my brain (must have been a deep discussion, right?). We were talking about boat storage and membership costs. This member stated that the combination cost of annual boat storage plus his general membership dues was the same amount he paid three years ago for a seasonal slip at another yacht club in our area. The suggestion was made that we could raise boat storage fees and still cost less than others. While this is mathematically correct one must keep in mind that any club’s membership dues must have “value received” or they will have no value at all; RHYC is no exception.
With that thought in mind I put together the following list.  RHYC offers its members, at a nominal cost (sometimes free) the following: year round boat and boat trailer storage, special member pricing at our sailing school, paddle boarding, a great kayaking venue, first come first served slip and mooring rentals, free overnight mooring, seasonal water fowl hunting, a beach, small sailboats for use, dog walking and nature views on our grounds, planned events, swimming pool, regattas, the best drink pour in town and good solid Pub food. It's a great place to bring an unlimited number of visiting family and friends anytime you wish, all in a traditional atmosphere. Members also enjoy reciprocal privileges with all Yachting Club of America member clubs, our outstanding monthly Newsletter and website. Stand on the RHYC deck any day of the year and take in the beauty of the place. Keep in mind, as the crow flies we are a scant 50 miles from Washington DC, in the heart of the most populated area in the US, still one has to look really hard to see anything manmade. Plus, you don’t even have to buy the Commodore a drink; that is unless you feel so inclined!
All kidding aside, membership at RHYC is a great deal that surely adds to your enjoyment of Maryland’s Eastern Shore living. Talk about value received! So the next time someone questions why you belong to RHYC give ‘em the “list” or just smile and think to yourself how smart you are for belonging to such a wonderful and cost effective club!
How about I see you there (in March that is)?

The Rock Hall Town Museum committee has found two antique sailboats that were originally built in Rock Hall and raced at the RHYC.  This 16-foot One Design boat is called a “Cricket Class." Cat rigged with a Marconi sail plan, the vessel has a deck with a cockpit and runs a centerboard.
The Museum is interested in taking on these craft to be restored -- with a long term goal of having the two boats race each other in exhibition.
To accomplish this goal we need to create a restoration committee willing to work and learn small boat restoration. The Museum staff will help out and offer guidance and the committee will have the full support of the RHYC as well.
It would be pretty nice to share this restoration project with the town of Rock Hall and build on our YC’s tradition.
If you wish to work on this project please contact Lee Urbani.
