What difference has coming to an art club made to local older people and their confidence?
Good Neighbours Coventry celebrates success!
The Good Neighbours volunteer celebration evening was a success!  We had a good turnout of volunteers from across the city, many of them meeting each other for the very first time, sharing stories and their experiences of being a Good Neighbours volunteer. The Celebration event was put together to show our appreciation for our volunteers for their time, dedication and support of local elderly people. We watched new Good Neighbours videos which highlight the excellent work volunteers are doing across the city and what impact this is making in the city (see above for the video about Good Neighbours groups). Local coordinators also shared case studies about some of the lonely isolated older people using our services, and how volunteer befrienders have changed their lives. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the cakes went down a treat.

To find out more, why not read the recent article in the Coventry Telegraph about us, or come along to St George's Coundon this evening at 6pm to our information session?
Good Neighbours Coordinator Helen has been out in the community - the Wednesday lunch club at St George's, Coundon is very welcoming. It was great to have tea and cake with the lovely new vicar Jennifer, who joined in.

Can you talk on the phone for 2 hours a week?

Can you give 2 hours a week to listen, pray and give hope to people over the phone? Crossline (part of the National Christian Helpline) receives over 400 calls per day between 9am and 12am. In 2017 they answered 82,500 calls. New listeners are needed to meet the demand - 50% of calls cannot be answered.

A typical shift might involve listening and praying for 10 people about a whole variety of issues. These may include prayer for healing, spiritual issues, mental health, loneliness, relationships, finance, work, or Christianity. No shift is ever the same. A recent client said, “I called your number, earlier today, and it helped me so much. Blessings on every one of you and I love you all for what you do.”

New listeners attend a free 18 hour training course in Telephone Listening Skills run over either 8 evenings or 4 Saturday mornings. The course gives you and them an opportunity to assess your suitability for this ministry. For more, contact john@covcitymission.org.uk or 02476 615931.

St Chad's Wood End opens new community hall

The newly renovated church hall at St Chad’s was officially opened on 4th July by the Bishop of Coventry, the Lord Mayor, Councillor Pat Seaman, and churchwarden Lorraine Page, who all spoke with enthusiasm about the improvements. The community of Wood End can now enjoy this regeneration project for years to come, thanks to grants from WREN and other organisations as part of a 12 month fundraising campaign. The day was well attended by local councillors and residents, who enjoyed the choir from Moat House School.

The celebrations continued on 7th July, when local residents viewed the new facilities and enjoyed a free family fun day. The hall includes refurbished toilets, and contemporary lighting, ceiling and floor coverings made of materials sympathetic to those with restricted hearing and vision, dementia suffers and autistic children.

St Chad's are also improving their outdoor area and expanding their secure onsite parking. For more information on using this community space, email woodendstchads@gmail.com.
