Effective Management of Over-The-Counter (OTC) Consultations – New Training Resource Available

NES Pharmacy has developed a new training resource to aid community pharmacy staff in the effective management of over-the-counter (OTC) consultations, specifically direct product requests or advice on the treatment of a condition or symptom.  This new resource is aimed primarily for medicines counter assistants (MCAs), but can be utilised by any member of the pharmacy team, and has been developed following the published findings from an investigation undertaken by the Consumer Association, WHICH? in 2013.

No Smoking Day 2017 – 8th March 2017

As of this year, the British Heart Foundation have decided against running the UK-wide National No Smoking Day campaign. We believe that this significant opportunity to engage with smokers and encourage them to consider quitting is too good to lose. As a result, we have decided to join in with ASH Scotland's efforts to keep No Smoking Day alive in Scotland! Using the
NHS Inform website, you can print off posters and other resources to use in your pharmacies along with hints and tips on how to make a success of both the day and the weeks leading up to it. Resources will be limited compared to previous years, but there's no reason that this should stop anyone from joining in!

The theme is "Feel like a winner!", and will centre around both the health and financial benefits to stopping smoking. Once the materials are available we will post them on our website, so keep an eye on our Latest News section!

No Smoking Day is always a fun and rewarding day, we encourage you to get creative and mention us @CPharmacyScot on Twitter or Facebook with details and pictures of your efforts so that we can spread awareness on social media and reach more smokers, showing what community pharmacy in Scotland can do for them!

Electronic Claim Messages

Practitioner Services have reported to us an increase in the number of items where an electronic claim has been sent and the prescription when received has been hand endorsed with NC or ND (not collected or not dispensed).  If you are changing the endorsements on the physical prescription, please ensure the electronic claim is amended accordingly to avoid being paid in error.

Gluten Free

November payment (paid at the end of January) was the first month where non or illegible completion of CHI numbers on gluten free prescriptions resulted in a 2 tiered payment reduction.  Completion of less than 90% resulted in a £50 deduction from the £125 gluten free foods service payment and less than 50% resulted in a £125 deduction.  We had 24 pharmacies where the full £125 was deducted and 198 pharmacies where £50 was deducted.  This system will run until at least March 2017 dispensing.

Payment Adjustments

Due to a late price change notification and an incorrect automation map, Practitioner Services have informed us of adjustments in the supplementary and services payments tab of the eschedule.  A description of the adjustments is in the table below.

We will continue to work with Practitioner Services to ensure the accurate reimbursement for contractors and to communicate to you where we receive notification of errors.  If you have any queries on this information, please contact the Pharmacy Services Team.
