Diversity & Inclusion

Best Practices & Resources

The goal for each program, chapter or league should be to become an organization where diversity and inclusion are a fundamental part of the values and culture of the program. Bringing together varied life experiences and perspectives adds significant value to your community and reinforces the concept of inclusivity.

US Lacrosse offers best practices and resources for working toward this goal, here.

It has been strongly suggested, that if your program has not started your registrations for 2021, to do so soon.  Nationally it is predicted that there will we see lower registrations due to COVID-19.

Also, be aware of what is happening in your location communities in regard to field space that your programs have historically utilized.  It is suggested that even though field data is not due until January 15, 2021, that you begin to look for back up locations for spring.  At least one school district will be having football moved from fall to spring, so that program found it necessary to look elsewhere for field space.

Best Practices for Programs

US Lacrosse has collected and developed best practices from some of the country’s most successful and thriving leagues.  Activating these standards helps to provide your players with the best and safest playing environment.

The best practices can be found here.

Registering Players

Please remember to review the MAYLA policies as you start registering players.  (You'll find the policies in your Program Manual Guidelines; the 2020 version will be available shortly after the new year and will have minor updates).  No member clubs should be registering any players from outside their respective school district boundaries.

If you have parents who want to register with your club and they do not live within your respective school district boundaries then you should refer those parents to contact, Robin Buckley (league commissioner) to get direction as to which member club they should be joining.

Open enrollment players must register in the club associated with the school district where they go to school.

If a parent lives in a school district that does not have a MAYLA member club, that parent should contact Robin Buckley.

If a parent lives in a school district that does not have a MAYLA club but that school district has a club from a different association, then they should be registering with the club associated with their school district.

MAYLA member clubs should NOT be recruiting players from outside the clubs school district boundaries

If a family attends a parochial/private school, then that family would register with the MAYLA member club that corresponds to the school district boundaries within in which their primary residence is located.

Programs' Contact Information

Many programs have had elections or otherwise changed leadership.  If your program has experienced a change in it's leadership, please contact Mary DiGiacomo or Emily Anderson with those names and email contacts so that we can be sure that everyone receives the information they should be.

Honoring the Game: The Official's Role in Creating a Positive Youth Sports Culture

60-Minute Online Course

The Positive Coaching Alliance ("PCA") is currently hosting an online interactive workshop that introduces the PCA's three main principles behind creating a positive youth sports culture for officials: Mastery (ELM); Never Too High, Never Too Low; and Honoring the Game.

The course is filled with powerful officiating tools, is based on the latest research from sports psychology, and reflects the "best practices" of elite officials across the country!

Coaches Development

Upcoming US Lacrosse Coaches Development Programs (CDPs) will be virtual.  CDP Level-1s will begin in November.  CDP Level-2s and Level-3s will be announced as they are available.  Watch for more information as this important education was sidelined in the spring.
US Lacrosse seeks to lead efforts to make lacrosse a more inclusive, accessible and tolerant sport - where anyone can play and everyone feels welcome and respected.  US Lacrosse has created an online training tool focused on cultural competency.  This resource is designed to assist lacrosse organizations in further educating coaches, parents, and athletes about the impact of diversity and inclusion.
The national background screening is now part of all adult coach membership purchases and renewals.  US Lacrosse is absorbing the cost of the background check, with no change to the direct cost of membership for coaches.
