Walking the Walk: Lived Experience shaping policy 

All In For Change and Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness member, David Pentland, has been appointed as a Policy Officer on a two-year secondment from Homeless Network Scotland to the Scottish Government. David will work with colleagues across the Homelessness Unit and with the Change Team to deliver commitments in the Ending Homelessness Together action plan. Huge congratulations from everyone at Homeless Network Scotland – and more from David himself very soon!

Homelessness in Scotland: 2020-21 statistics 

The latest Scottish Government Homelessness Statistics were published this week for 2020-21. Comparison with the previous year reflects the impact of the lockdown year and measures put in place. This includes an increase in the use of and time spent in temporary accommodation, a reduction in rough sleeping, fewer overall applications and fewer evictions from the private rented sector.

New Social Lettings Agency launched in Aberdeen 

Aberdeen Cyrenians has launched a fresh style of letting agency based on private social letting and the Housing First principles. Settled: Homes for All will connect landlords to people who are currently in temporary accommodation. Support, in line with Housing First principles, will be offered for tenants to prevent repeat homelessness. 

Healthy Housing for Scotland 

Public Health Scotland has published a briefing on the fundamental link between housing and public health, intended to support the implementation of Housing to 2040, the Scottish Government’s strategy for housing over the next 20 years launched in March. 
Housing First Wales Conference    
Homeless Network Scotland is part of a network supporting Housing First across the nations and regions of the UK. Cymorth Cymru in Wales are hosting the Housing First Wales conference on 15 July, and we are pleased to be part of the programme. Register here.   
Glasgow Overnight Welcome Centre: report published 
Glasgow City Mission has published a report outlining experiences and outcomes for Overnight Welcome Centre guests last winter, replacing dormitory style night shelters with a city-centre hotel. A reduction in numbers and average occupancy compared to last year and 87% of guests moved onto positive outcomes. 

New Systems Alliance – Conversations that Challenge

SFHA completes Executive Team  
Aaron Hill and Carolyn Lochhead will join our strategic partner, SFHA, as Director of Policy and Membership & Director of Public Affairs & Communications, respectively. Aaron joins from the Welsh Housing Federation and Carolyn moves across from mental health charity, SAMH. Good luck to them both in their roles. 

Settled status deadline passes 

The deadline for EU nationals living in the UK to register for settled status has passed. The UK Government has indicated that extensions may be available in some cases. A new set of informative materials for organisations and individuals has been published by Just Right and are available here

Scottish Government Update

New Grant Fund for Tenants 
The Scottish Government has announced a £10 million fund, offering grants to tenants in rent arrears because of the pandemic. Details will be developed by the Scottish Government in consultation with key partners with the aim of the funding being available later in 2021. Read more at Scottish Housing News

Consultation on Scottish Social Housing Charter 

Scottish Government consultation running until 9 September forms part of the review of the Scottish Social Housing Charter. The Charter sets out outcomes and indicators to monitor performance of social landlords and local authorities as they deliver their duties to tenants, applicants and homeless households. 

Licencing Scheme for Short Term Lets 

Seeking to strike a better balance between the tourism industry and ensuring there is enough housing available in communities across Scotland, the Scottish Government has launched a consultation on a licencing scheme for the sector.
