PTA PRESIDENT MESSAGE
Harnessing the Power of Volunteers!
Wow, Winter break is quickly approaching. Thank you to the room parents for coordinating recognition for our teachers during the holiday season and for any celebrations you have planned in class that will boost the spirit of others.

Gratitude. To Ellen Zoffel and her Garden team for all the amazing programs, she is helping to facilitate at our school. The photos on Facebook illustrate the wonderful memories and life experiences the students are making and developing while attending the garden during their school day. We are so fortunate to have these parent volunteers spearheading this amazing opportunity for our kids.

Need. As always we are looking for volunteers to help with the various programs and events at the school. Please keep an eye out on our Facebook page and website for events you can support and help. We are still in need of a Procurement Chair for the auction.

Support. Here are some benefits of a PTA and your volunteering and participating from PTA.org.

  • Measurable Results More than 85 research studies conducted over the past 30 years prove that kids do better when parents are involved. Grades are higher. Test scores improve. Attendance increases.
  • Boost Children’s Well-Being. PTAs focus on what students need to be successful in their learning, including nutrition, health, school safety, physical fitness and general well-being. PTA works with schools to ensure that children succeed.
  • Enjoy Informed Parents. Involved parents understand the challenges schools face and become part of the solution. By developing a closer relationship with parents, student achievement improves, and the school develops a positive reputation in the community.

Thanks for reading! I hope all of our Lafayette families have a wonderful break with family and friends.

SCHOOL NOTES AND UPDATES
Daneah Galloway, PAWSITIVITY
Hello Lafayette Community! My name is Niko Craven and the PAWSitivity team’s word for the month of December is INTEGRITY. Integrity means being honest and having strong principles. Integrity can also mean being whole and undivided like our first word and theme of the year, UNITY

To show integrity we could for example not lie about our homework, but make sure we are doing it! Integrity can also be shown by standing up for what you believe. If you have integrity and you see someone being treated badly you can stand up for that person. Some ways to do this might be to say “Don’t be the bully” and “Stop it.” Showing integrity means we don’t listen to the bad stuff and we focus on the good stuff. It also would help show the people who are being mean what integrity looks like. If we show integrity, it means we are helping people, being honest, and standing up for our point. Remember to always have integrity!

Mary K Sykes, SCHOOL NURSE
Please turn in your child’s updated Provider Immunization Records, including vaccines and exemptions to the School Nurse by December 1, 2017.  This is required for attendance by Washington State Law.  Our current verified immunization rate is below the level of safety for our school population.   We need Provider verification documents, not a parent report.

For safey purposes, if you have not already provided them, please bring inhalers and emergency medications to the School Nurse, along with the Medication Authorization signed by parent and provider.  Field trips are coming up and we do not wish students to be without their medication.

LAFAYETTE RUNNING CLUB
Did you know that the Lafayette Leopards Running Club works with three national programs to keep our students active during lunch recess? These programs, Marathon Kids, Fuel Up to Play 60 and Action for Healthy Kids provide funds, training and ideas to keep our kids active. Marathon Kids, a national program sponsored by Nike, seeks to keep kids moving with a goal of running 4 marathons in one year! Fuel Up to Play 60 is a nutrition and physical activity program, which partners with the NFL and National Dairy Council to encourage kids to create a healthy life. Action for Healthy Kids’ vision is for every student to be healthy, active and ready to learn. By partnering with these established programs, the Running Club seeks to keep our students healthy and moving! The students set goals, run/walk to achieve these goals, while laying the groundwork for a healthy and active life. Running Club is held every Tuesday and Thursday during lunch recess on the playground. Come join us!

UPDATES

Ellen Zoffel and Alden Alvarado, GARDEN + SUSTAINABILITY
Nature may be taking a rest but things are busy in the garden program at Lafayette!  Outside kids have been prepping for winter by cleaning beds, planting cover crops of garlic and crocus, and protective coverings for the kale.  Inside, we have been learning about the pumpkin and making lots of art with seeds, leaf rubbings, homemade mint tea and vegetable dyes.  A new favorite activity is feeding and visiting our resident worms that live in the Plant Lab.  We have installed new grow lights and microscopes too.  Our bulletin board in the front lobby now has hundreds of pictures of the kids working in the garden.  Special mention to Mr. Schroeder’s class who ate pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, kale, mint, green tomatoes, and raw garlic all in one class.

Auction
Save the date, our auction is scheduled for March 31 at 5:00 pm.
To All Room Parents:  You, with input from your teacher, class and parents should be coming up with ideas for the class art auction project.  Please contact Renee, myred5@yahoo.com and let her know what your class has chosen for an auction art project by Friday, December 1, 2017.  The Room Art Leader needs to provide the following information:
  • A brief description of the project idea OR if you are choosing chair/canvas.
  • Art leader contact info: name, email, phone number
Please be reminded the deadline for the completed class auction art project is Friday, February 16, 2018.
Again, we cannot say it enough - THANK YOU to all of our Fundraising Chairs and committee members for all of your hard work so far!
