Student of the Month Spotlight

Colette Hartman, '27

My name is Colette Hartman, and I am a fourth-year student on the pre-law track
studying International Studies and Political Science with minors in Spanish and Theatre.

For my study abroad experience, I studied in Madrid, Spain fall semester of my third year. Studying abroad gave me the chance to interact with people and dialoguing outside of class.  I loved getting to learn about what's going on in others' countries and also to hear other students’ perceptions of what is going on in the US being on the forefront of global news recently.  I also spent a summer in Colombia, completing an internship in a non-profit called Proyecto Florecer, learning about their work in the community and helping with my Spanish vocabulary.  Learning the language is important with my International Studies focus in Latin America.

The study abroad experience was great opportunity to use the language outside of the classroom. The takeaways from my internship experience is that Spain gave me a much more balanced view of my work and personal life coming away with a better sense of community and appreciation for quality time. The most valuable part of the International Studies education, I think, is spending time abroad in environments different from the U.S., and helps reflect on the kind of person you want to be and what contributions you want to make to the world!
If you would like us to feature your international travel experience, please send your story and photo to internationalstudies@case.edu.
