July 2018

Liberty is the breath of life to nations. - George Bernard Shaw
4th of July!

The Freedom of Homeownership!

Monica has a lot to celebrate this year! We told you about her earlier this year when she completed her pre-purchase counseling and moved into the lending process. All of her hard work and determination has paid off. Monica is officially free of rent and landlords and owns her own home! She just purchased a beautiful home in Morristown through Clinch-Powell’s Homeownership Made Easy Program!

With Homeownership Made Easy, Clinch-Powell helps the borrower to find affordable financing, often without down payment requirements, and uses Federal HOME dollars to purchase and rehab a house to sell to the borrower at an affordable rate. The program essentially enables borrowers who might only qualify for a very low amount to purchase a better quality home that will pass the proper inspections and provide more stability for them in the future, while remaining within their budget. This summer, Carson-Newman students are serving with Appalachian Outreach through a new partnership with our Appalachia CARES AmeriCorps program! Members will have a few different focus areas, all with the goal of providing housing services in the Jefferson County area. The majority of members will be facilitating volunteer teams to make needed home repairs for low income residents, while learning about the importance of appropriate, safe, quality housing. Other members will be at the Youth Center providing programming and day time care for youth in the community, as well as education on area housing issues and resources to volunteers and parents. Additional members will be serving at the Samaritan House and main Appalachian Outreach center, providing needed resources, education and budget counseling to area residents in need of a better housing situation. At the conclusion of the ten-week service experience, these members will have engaged over 300 volunteers and completed repairs on approximately 20 homes. Over 1,800 community members will benefit from all of Appalachian Outreach's summer programs! In addition to the summer team, we currently have three other AmeriCorps members serving year-long positions with the organization. Learn more about Appalachia CARES AmeriCorps on our website, or check out the Appalachia CARES Facebook page for stories and photos of members service.
