Alison & Denver
Area 17 Show Jumping Qualifiers -  18th February 2018
by Lindsey Templeman

This Area Qualifier combined both the Novice and Intermediate Show Jumping Qualifiers, with Championships to be held in different venues in April. We had two Novice teams entered at the 80cm height and one Intermediate team at 90cm.  Kate Ebby was riding as an Individual with her two horses at 1m and 1.10m heights.
Unfortunately poor Gemma Hamilton who was to compete on Humphrey had a nasty fall a couple of days before the competition, and broke her collar bone so reluctantly pulled out. All of us in the club wish you a speedy recovery Gemma!  This meant that there was a vacant slot in the novice black team, and Alison Jenden, already riding the young, but rather gorgeous Lizzie, stepped in with the dressage master, Denver.   A big thank to her, and Heather for that. There had to be a bit of team swopping then as a rider can’t ride 2 different horses in the same team.
Then, on the morning of the competition, Amanda Grierson’s horse, competing in the 90cm had to be pulled out with a touch of colic, and Lottie Ramsay’s pony in one of the 80 teams had a ‘fat’ knee!  These qualifiers are tricky as they come very quickly at the beginning of our club’s year and unfortunately we weren’t able to use our willing reserves as their memberships weren’t quite in in time for the prelim entries.

That left us with only three riders in the 90 team, Hayley Vincent on Roxanne, Sophy Herridge on TVS Timepiece and Kate Butler on Pauldary’s Emerald Tiger. The Black 80 team had all four riders consisting of Louise Turner on Immy, Lauren Burchall on Rio, Alison Jenden on the young Lizzie and Hayley on the famous (or is it infamous?!) Woody.

The Gold 80 team consisted of Alison on Denver, Tamzin Corbett on Salem and Lisa Theron on Stanhopes Zorro.  You will always be at a bit of a disadvantage with only three in a team as all three scores have to count, rather than being able to drop the score with the highest faults as you can with a team of four. However, it doesn’t mean the team can’t do well and those in 90 and above had the chance to qualify as an individual.
The 90 team had to jump in the outdoor arena and were first to start for Chilworth. We had three good scores to start, with Hayley and Kate going clear and just four faults for Sophy.  The 80 competition was in the indoor arena and our Gold team challenge kicked off with Alison on Denver who did a beautiful clear, followed by Tamzin with an unlucky pole down and Lisa who also did a wonderful clear round… so a great start for them.
Our Black team were all towards the end of the competition and first to go was Louise who had just 4 faults.  Lauren had 12 faults, and Alison on Lizzie, and Hayley with Woody had 4 faults a piece.
Our 90 team all had mixed fortunes in the second round and with a few too many faults and the disadvantage of only a team of 3, they weren’t in the final placings but well done to all three riders who did their best and we are proud of you.
The second round of the 80 teams started with Denver, who showed he was no ‘one trick pony’ by doing his second clear of the day and appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself !! Tamzin and Salem, again, did a super round but just had the last fence down (which was heading for the exit – he’s no fool!).  Lisa had an unexpected refusal, then jumped it but knocked a pole which is a real shame.
