MsWas's Message Corner

Hello CBR12 participants and friends of Cannonball Read,

I'm sending this today to make sure that you remember… the 21st night of September! And you are welcome for that earworm! ;-) Hopefully that put a smile on your face - I'll take an an eyeroll too.

Around here to keep some measure of sanity, I'm focusing on CBR and making the end of this year is one of our best. We're already on target for a really good third quarter donation to the American Cancer Society, (but we'd be happy to increase that amount).

In the upcoming months we're continuing bingo, adding some more diversions, and don't forget the (completely optional) Holiday Book Exchange. Check out a gallery of some of the cute photos of books and pets people have shared in the exchanges over the years.

Last, US Cannonballers, please confirm that you are registered to vote (and register if you aren't), and make a plan for voting in November. Are you getting a mail-in ballot or planning another way to vote? Double check with your district, and see how COVID-19 changes may affect what you have planned. FYI: Here is the Voter Registration Status page with links to every state's voter registration/assistance page from the National Association of Secretaries of State.

Best wishes to you, and I hope you have plenty of books to read!

Q&A with a Cannonballer: Bea Pants

How do you decide what to choose next from your TBR stack?

If I really have no idea which of the hundreds of books (between physical and Kindle books) I want to read next, I recently developed a system that involved going through my Goodreads list and tagging everything that I owned a physical copy of and everything I owned on kindle and then using google's random number generator. It's ridiculous and overly complicated and there's no way I would have done it if I weren't stuck at home. I didn't come up with this all on my own. I heard about it on a podcast.

Bingo Check-in

We've got a little more than a month left in the CBR 12 Book Bingo Challenge! Thirty-four intrepid reviewers have posted nearly 300 reviews in their race for the Bingo Championship. Check out the September recap post for details!

Make sure you put cbr12bingo in the tags at the bottom of your review to make sure all your Bingo entries get counted. Keep up the good work!

#CannonBookClub

The next #CannonBookClub will be October 16 and 17, revisiting an author we've enjoyed before. Will book clubbers enjoy Emily St. John Mandel's Glass Hotel as much as they did Station Eleven? Come read, chat, and find out!

CBR Diversions

I hope you all have been enjoying the Comment Diversions as much as we have. The Summer Reading Wrap-up is up to 62 comments! The August caption diversion was pretty fun too. Feel free to keep chiming in, and let us know if you have an idea for the next Diversion!

Book sale

The first-ever CBR book sale is ending September 30. We've raised $112 for the American Cancer Society, and there's still time to add to it! MsWas has added a few more books, and dropped the minimum price to $1. Check out what's new and what's left, and thank you as always for your support!

Style Tip: Don't forget to add a category/genre

For those of us who tend to get into reading ruts, categories, genres, and tags are great. Only want to read mysteries? Ta-da, there's a whole category you can peruse to find CBR favorites! Never read a romance and want to branch out? Um...how many years do you want to devote to this project? When you're posting your review, remember to check however many categories you think should apply as (the category list is on the right sidebar under the Publish button). That will help others find your reviews, and will help ingres77 when he does his stats posts, and will be just generally helpful.

If you don't choose at least one category, WordPress defaults to Fiction.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month

Preaching to the choir here, I know, but I'll take any reason to celebrate right now! Do you remember when you got your first library card? How many do you have right now? (I have three.) Tag us @cannonballread, and let us know on one of our social platforms

It was comforting to return to an established world: cbr12bingo “Yellow”: Dome'Loki's review of King of Scars

Sep 20, 2020 01:09 pm
I love this gorgeous cover, from the golden yellow to the intricate details referencing elements of the story.  I’ve been looking forward to reading this, so I was delighted that it fits the yellow square!  Three colors now crossed off on my bingo card. After going through three long books, two of which were challenging and thought provoking, requiring close attention and processing of what I was reading, the other a chonker of an epic fantasy, I was ready to return to something familiar.  This […]

Considering Winnie the Pooh: CoffeeShopReader's review of Winnie-the-Pooh

Sep 20, 2020 12:22 pm
Bingo Review 23: Roaring 20s I didn’t feel like a lot of drama right now; calm reading is good right now for me. So what to do for this square? Like a lot of people, I suspect, I know who-what Winnie-the-Pooh is, but I can’t remember ever having read any of the original stories, the first volume of which came out in 1926. I feel like I must have, but upon picking up that first volume of stories, Winnie-the-Pooh, they weren’t too familiar seeming; unless […]
