Sex, Violence and Politics

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain described a circus as "the splendidest sight that ever was." But despite this sweetly innocent image from 1883, Twain knew that circus before the Civil War had been raw stuff for rowdy audiences. Touring circus presented performers in skimpy clothes, and performances with a strong hint of sex. Reflecting a participatory age, talking clowns told dirty jokes and political jokes, bantering with raucous audiences. (One clown, Dan Rice, was nationally famous for his political wit, then ran for president - legitimately - from the ring.) The circus had to fight locals daily, with Hudson River towns especially notorious. But by the 1880s rowdiness became considered vulgar, the circus turned into innocent family amusement, and a sentimental symbol. Why did the circus change? How did politics change? How did America change?
David Carlyon
Author, Independent Scholar
David Carlyon is a writer and independent scholar. He has a Ph.D. in theater history from Northwestern University and was a clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He has been an Equity actor and playwright, graduated from the University of Michigan, served as a military policeman, then graduated from Berkeley Law. His award-winning "Dan Rice: The Most Famous Man You've Never Heard Of," is a biography and cultural history of 19th-century America.

By re-shelving books, participating in events, sharing ideas, baking for a sale, or simple putting up flyers, they do what they can to support the library they love. World Book Night

Wednesday, April 23
World Book Night U.S. is dedicated to spreading the love of reading, person to person. On World Book Night, 25,000 book givers each give away 20 copies of a specially-printed, not-for-resale World Book Night U.S. edition of a book they have read and loved, chosen from a list of 30 titles selected by a panel of librarians and booksellers. The volunteer book givers personally hand out their copies to complete strangers, people who may never have owned a book of their own.
The library will be celebrating by handing out our special world book night selection as well as brand new children’s books for any child that attends all day long.
This will also be the kick-off our new oral-history program, Small Town Stories. Come by anytime on Wednesday, April 23 and tell your story. We are looking to record stories of important events in Millerton or in the lives of the people from Millerton. If you have pictures that go with your story please bring them too. We can scan them and include them in our collection. Eventually we will make them available to the public to borrow.

Elder Law Workshop

Albany Law School Students will provide a free, legal information workshop for local senior citizens, family members, caregivers and elder care professionals.
Workshop topics include Wills, Health Care Proxies, Executors and an overview of legal issues affecting seniors. All are welcome to attend, but in order to provide materials for everyone, please call 518-789-3340 to reserve your place or click here to register.

Open Mic Night

Calling all musicians and music lovers. Here we go again with another open mic night, hosted by Charlie Knox. Musicians from novices to seasoned pros are invited to participate. Poetry reciting, storytelling, stand-up comedy bits are also welcome. And if you just want to come and listen, that's fine, too.
Annex doors open at 6:30PM. Free admission. Refreshments available.
