Her STEM Skills An Expert 'Think-In' for Action 30 June 2021
The first Her STEM Skills Expert Think In on 30 June 2021 was incredible, both the energy in the virtual room and the response of the participants. Supported by Minister Simon Harris and his Department, experts from industry, academia and government came together to discuss four spotlight initiatives to develop and retain female talent in STEM. It's summer and apart from WITS Reads, WITS is taking a break until the end of August. We'll be back in early September with the next issue of WITSWORDS and news of WITS events for the rest of the year. WITS News

WITS Events January - June 2021
We hope you've enjoyed our WITS events this year so far and that you can join us for the events planned for the rest of the year. Just to recap:
  • WITS Leadership Series ran from 24 February to 21 April and the closing session is still to come. These were one hour chats or panel events on leadership themes and topics such as the future of work, tech, science, engineering etc. Thanks to our speakers, panellists and WITS Executive facilitators and participants for the series.
  • WITS Strategy Session on 10 February 2021 was a briefing session on the ambitious WITS Strategy 2021-2025 adopted at the 2020 AGM. Thanks to all who took part and special thanks to all the members who have joined WITS subcommittees since then.
  • WITS Student Series 2021 kicked off on 11 March 2021. This event, with TUD WiSTEM, Tallaght introduced the 2021 Student Series. The series continues this September with career forums, panel discussions, and upskilling workshops for our student members. 
  • WITS Reads has continued this year and as noted last month, we have read Kindred by Octavia E Butler, Broad Band by Claire L Evans, Whistleblower by Susan Fowler and Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay. A great reading list.
  • Virtual coffee in June. WITS members kicked off two mornings with a virtual coffee and an informal chat about all things WITS.
  • The Her STEM Skills Think In concluded this part of the year on 30 June 2021.
Thanks to all on the Events Sub-committee and the WITS Executive led by chair Dr Andrea C Johnson for an amazing series of events.

WITS in the media
WITS has been featured in the media a number of times since January. On
7 March 2021 WITS contributed to Challenge to halt decline in tech article in the Sunday Business Post.  WITS partnered with Media Planet in the 23 June 2021 Women in STEM campaign with Supporting Women in their STEM Careers by Chair Dr Andrea C Johnson. 

Admin updates
  • WITS is closing the LinkedIn group at the end of July. The WITS company LinkedIn page remains, do follow us.
  • The annual data and privacy review will take place over the summer. This ensures that WITS adheres to the EU general data and privacy regulations (GDPR).

Magaly Mora Cork, new role.
Magaly V. Mora, WITS member and Project Manager at PIXAPP Pilot Line, Tyndall Instiute, has secured a fantastic new role with Stryker as Senior Project Engineer in Advanced Operations - congratulations Magaly.

FameLab Ireland Dublin finals
Congratulations to WITS Executive member Tammy Strickland on winning the 24 June Dublin heat of FameLab.
Both Tammy and runner up Tembi  will be in the FameLab National final later this year!



WITS members Maria Delaney wins association of British Science Writers Award
Noteworthy reporter and WITS member Maria Delaney has won the Association of British Science Writers Research Policy Story of the year Award. Congratulations Maria. The award was for part one of the Noteworthy investigation Academic Uncertainty - On social welfare, unable to buy a house: The reality facing Ireland's academics.

  • Women choose tech - new programme from FIT. Fast track into information technology (FIT) continues their mission to increase access and inclusion for female tech apprentice candidates through their ‘Women choose tech’ programme. Congratulations on a much needed programme.
  • Soapbox Science Dublin took place online on 3 July. You can catch up with the talks here. Congratulations to Soapbox Science and all the speakers for a great event. Great to see so many researchers talk about their work including WITS Exec member Tammy Strickland with her talk "Rhythms of Life: Day in the Life of a Human Brain". We love the images. Watch out for the Galway event at the end of the summer.
  • Top trends in tech. Latest research from McKinsey Digital.
  • Dogpatch Labs has a new NDRC Accelerator cohort. Register interest in their demo day on 28 September 2021.
  • Career news from Silicon Republic - good reading.
STEM Events
  • 12 July @ 2 pm IOP Supporting women in physics webinar on the the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) UK and Ireland. Join the webinar to find out how to support women in physics. Register here.
  • 20-22 July Finding Ada Conference. This is a worldwide online conference over three days with three themes. Tickets are free, register here.
    • Career development: Career advice; professional skills; personal growth.
    • Policy and advocacy: Talent acquisition, retention and promotion; business policy, processes and standards; advocacy strategies.
    • Widening participation: Increasing girls’ interest in STEM; increasing diversity; supporting diverse communities.
  • 27 September -1 October 2021 Virtual Grace Hopper Celebration, more here. Tickets and registration opens mid-July. The them is #DareTo – as a call to action and reminder of all that women in STEM have to offer: to ourselves, to our communities, to our place of work, and to each other.
  • 3-5 November 2021 Women in Technology online festival, There are four festival themes: skills, processes, team and digital with many excellent speakers. Tickets available now.
Graduate and Student opportunities
 

STEM Education Update 

  • Computer Science is becoming a well-accepted part of the Leaving Certificate. In 2020-2021 it was studied in 92 schools and more schools will introduce the subject in September 2021. Read the LC Computer Science update here.
  • Congratulations to FIT Fast track into information technology on their schools programme called ‘choose tech’  being piloted currently in Dublin over the next two years. The programme offers DEIS & Youthreach students the opportunity to complete tech taster digital badges and interactions with tech professionals through ‘near peer’ engagement.
