Dear Readers,

We are reaching the end of the year, but bringing new promises and sophisticated understandings of media and celebrity culture.  We welcome new readers and thank all writers, thinkers, educators, and artists who have been an integral part of our journey. As a subject association, we mobilize a progressive academic community and develop advocacy through media and public relations.  We also envision vibrant reading spaces and intellectual dialogues in cities across the world. 

Barbara C. Bell quotes Cornel West from an article on "Intellectuals and Public Responsibility": "I think the life of the mind is fundamentally about a sense of awe, wonder, openness, exploration….It’s an adventure in exploring different views and viewpoints, different arguments and perspectives. There’s a certain capaciousness that goes with it, an expansiveness of heart, mind, and soul that has its own exhilarating joy in and of itself, and it is a desirable way of being in the world. It’s still worldly, in the way Edward Said put it. It’s rooted in circumstances, but it has its own intrinsic joy." (Hedgehog Review, v 9, #1 [Spring '07], p. 87). The thought helps us to re-discover and restore the calling of the heroic spirit present in many public personalities and intellectuals.

In this edition, you will find careful guidelines for the organization of pre-constituted panels or workshops at the CMCS conference in May 2015.  We are looking forward to reviewing all panel / workshop proposals and paper abstracts after the deadline November 30, 2014.  Also, please find descriptions of Multi-media Stardom in Hong Kong: Image, Performance and Identity, Exhibition-Conference on The Stardom and Celebrity of David Bowie 1965—2015, Persona Studies symposium and journal, and Queering Paradigms 6.

Guidelines for the Organization of Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) Conference Panel or Workshop at Ryerson University, Toronto - May 27-28, 2015

  1. Panels and workshop must include four or five participants, including the organizer.
  2. Panels should have the following general format: each participant presents a paper on the same topic but with different views. This is followed by discussions among panel members and also contributions from the audience. Panels require a moderator who should be one of the participant.
  3. Workshops should have a format similar to panels except that the emphasis is on educating or training the audience on a particular subject.
  4. The organizer must submit a panel or workshop package that includes:
  • Title and aim of the panel / workshop;
  • Target audience and any required background;
  • The name, e-mail address, affiliation (if applicable) and a 70-150 words professional biography of each participant;
  • A 250-word abstract of the paper / training topic presented by each participant;
  • For panels, state which participant will be moderator. The moderator also needs to submit an abstract which should be neutral, for example introducing the topic, providing the background, and identifying issues to be discussed;
  • Any variations in the panel / workshop formats stated above are to be described;
  • Duration required, if it is different from the following. Normally, panels/workshops are attributed the same time as regular papers for each participants + additional time for discussion TBD according to time availability in the program. This should in general not exceed 1 to 1 1/2 hour.

       5.  Panel / workshop proposals will undergo review by the program committee.
       6.  Submission and acceptance notification deadlines are identical to regular
       7.  Inclusion in the program is conditional to payment of the conference fee by all  
            participants, except for the panel /workshop organizer who will have its
            registration fee waived as long as the other panel participants have paid theirs 
            in full by the registration deadline (to be specified in the acceptance letter).
      8.  The edited book that will be published following the conference can either
           contain individual papers from each participant or a single paper reflecting all
           presentations and the subsequent discussion, co-authored by all members of the
           panel.Panel and workshop paper(s) are eligible for selection as best papers to be
           published in a peer-reviewed journal in extended form.

Multi-media Stardom in Hong Kong: Image, Performance and Identity (Routledge 2014)

This book details original research into the practices and discourse of multimedia stardom alongside changing social and cultural landscapes in Hong Kong since 1980, while referencing the history of stardom in Chinese language media from the early 19th Century. It examines the cultural and sociological significance of stardom in the region, and the conditions which gave rise to such famous stars as Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat. This book elaborates the distinction between multimedia stardom and celebrity, asserting that in Hong Kong stardom has been central in the production and consumption of local media, while demonstrating the importance of multimedia stardom as part of the ‘cultural Chinese’ mediascape and transnational popular culture from both historical and contemporary contexts.

Exhibition-Conference on The Stardom and Celebrity of David Bowie 1965—2015

Coming to Australia in 2015, ACMI presents David Bowie Is, the acclaimed global exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum. As part of this ground-breaking multi-media experience will be the conference, The Stardom and Celebrity of David Bowie 1965—2015, reflecting upon his cultural and artistic significance through the most important frames.

The conference will be held at the ACMI in Melbourne on the 17th and 18th July 2015 and will include talks and presentations in the exhibition space.

David Bowie’s cultural and artistic currency is presently at an all time high with his first album in almost a decade, The Next Day (2013), reviewed as one of the greatest rock comebacks ever (Gill, 2013); the release of a series of portentous music videos that recall and reflect upon his artistic career; the record-breaking David Bowie Is global exhibition tour, and; the recently released ‘Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)’ from his forthcoming compilation album spanning 50 years of recorded work on Nothing Has Changed (November, 2014).

Against this energetic background, the conveners regard this to be a perfect moment to consider and reflect upon the cultural and artistic significance of and on ‘David Bowie’ in rock, pop, film, art, fashion and performance.

For this special ACMI sponsored conference, we are seeking academic abstracts of 250 words (for papers that will be 20 minutes in duration), or similar length proposals for performances or creative expressions that assess Bowie in relation to his music, performativity, and identity. Persona Studies – Inaugural Issue

The inaugural issue of Persona Studies is scheduled for open access publication in March 2015. This exciting new journal will be preceded by a Working Papers Symposium held in Melbourne, Australia on February 5 2015, with virtual participation welcome. Abstracts are now being sought for the symposium and/or the inaugural issue of the journal.
Open Call: Research and writing on any aspect of persona and persona studies

Persona studies is an emerging area of cross-disciplinary study that investigates the presentation of the self and the masks that we use as we construct ourselves in real and virtual settings and worlds. It is an exploration of the public self and how these versions of identity come to prominence in contemporary culture.  It acknowledges that we all negotiate and construct personas that we deploy and employ in work and professional environments as much as in our recreational and leisure activities: much of the emerging work in persona studies is closer studies of these particular settings and how they help frame our public selves. The field of study has antecedents that connect its work to the study of celebrity and public personalities, performance studies, media and cultural studies and game identity work, biographical research, life-writing and autobiography work along with Internet studies, communication studies, cultural anthropology, social psychology, sociology and philosophy of the self and gender studies.  It has further links with areas that also look at reputation and impression management and the critical investigation of branding, self-branding and the 'quantified self'. The journal's intentions are to facilitate an intellectual exchange, debate and discussion around persona and its constitution.  It is an invitation to investigate its varied manifestations, its patterning in contemporary culture, its differentiation in different technological and cultural settings, and its conceptual and material significance and value.

Written paper submissions:

In the first instance, submit a 250-300 word abstract to, with 'Full Paper' in the subject line, by 8 December 2014. You will be notified to proceed to a full length paper within a week of abstract submission. For guidelines on the preparations of your full paper, see Author Guidelines:

Full papers should be between 5000-8000 words, including citations, and will be vetted by the editorial team prior to submission for blind peer-review. Acceptance for peer review does not guarantee inclusion in the inaugural issue of the journal, but the editorial team may work with authors to develop papers for later issues. The second issue will have a special themed section on health and persona, and we encourage authors interested in this area to submit abstracts for inclusion.

Working Paper Symposium submissions:

In the first instance, submit a 250-300 word abstract to, with 'Working Paper' in the subject line by 8 December 2014. We will notify by 15 December 2014. Symposium participants must submit either a 10 minute audio-visual presentation OR a 2000-3000 word written paper by 28  January. This will be circulated to workshop participants and attendees.

The symposium is designed to allow ample discussion. Therefore, each presenter will have fifteen minutes to focus on their work. In this time, you will briefly introduce your project or paper in process before shifting to group discussion. Where possible, papers on similar or complimentary themes will be presented consecutively, and more general discussion will follow each themed section. You may attend in person or participate virtually, and your paper will also be considered for inclusion in the inaugural issue of the journal.

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS: Queering Paradigms

After an exciting and highly productive five year journey through four continents, the Queering Paradigms conference will visit its point of origin again in its sixth incarnation. Queering Paradigms 6 is planned to be held in South England 20-25 July 2015.

Queering the academic conference format, QP6 will be hosted at two places: at the University of Winchester and at the other end of the pilgrims’ way, at QP’s birth place at Canterbury Christ Church University.  QP6 part-merges with VariAbilit(ies) II (questioning the dis/abled binary), organised by Chris Mounsey ( to form a conference continuum, variably the “same only different”. A rest/sightseeing/travel day is included in the combined schedule:

The combined conferences focus on the main theme of Ethics Beyond Troubling: Towards Queer(ed) (Vari)Ability.
The QP6 conference aims to establish a multidisciplinary and bi- (or multi)- locational discourse around the possibility, challenges and potential of Intersectional Post/Queer Ethics and Practices beyond subversion and troubling.  In addition, papers from all disciplines and methodologies concerned with queer life, culture and practices will add to the multi-/trans-/inter-disciplinary workshop style discourse of listening and learning, which characterizes the QP project.    

We invite submissions of proposals from all angles of queering; and in particular from the area of Post/Queer(ed) Ethics (Applied or Theoretical) intersecting with, troubling and transcending (paradigms in) Health, Psychology, Special Needs Education and Disability Studies. Further intersections could include age; race/ethnicity; socio-economic status; religion/faith/irreligion.
Paper (poster) abstracts and panel proposals are invited by 30 November 2014. Please send to Prof. B. Scherer, CCCU ( Paper abstracts should be around 300 words long and include an indication whether the paper is intended to be an original (unpublished and not under review) contribution to the QP6 book, to be published 2016 with Peter Lang, Oxford (containing 16-20 chapters). Full papers are expected to be submitted by 1 May 2015.


The Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) is an international organization and research network that helps coordinating academic research and media commentaries on celebrity culture and popular arts. CMCS carries a pedagogical philosophy that inspires integration of research and media skills training in academic and public discourses of fame.  The centre believes in intellectual, aesthetic, and ethical values of bridging gaps in higher education and media.  With this view, CMCS helps coordinating research, publications, creative productions, and media commentaries to restore artistic and ethical acts for social change.
