Contemporary film and media composers have a wide array of gear at their disposal; finding the right tools for one's particular needs, and keeping up with the most current trends, can be a daunting task. For this seminar, film composer Christopher North will be joined by ROLI specialists Ruben Dax and Niko Paterakis, and Yamaha product manager Ben Harrison. Join us for an in-depth discussion on innovative technology and the composing process!
Ruben Dax Ruben Dax is an electronic musician and multi-instrumentalist from New York City. Using his experience as a performer, sound engineer, and musical instrument designer, Ruben now works as a Product Specialist for ROLI. He also releases and performs music as his solo project "Dr. Bones".
Ben Harrison is product marketing manager for digital pianos and portable keyboards at Yamaha Corporation of America. He previously worked for seven years at Yamaha Canada. Ben recently led the launches of the Genos digital workstation keyboard and Clavinova CSP, playing a pivotal role in the initial successes of these concept products.
Niko Paterakis is a Greek composer based in NYC. As a multi-instrumentalist, he began composing and performing music for performing arts with community groups while he lived and studied in the UK. A few years later, he was admitted to Berklee College of Music to study film scoring at their postgraduate facilities in Valencia, Spain. Since moving to New York, Niko has been working on fine-tuning ROLI’s customer-facing operations. He composes for libraries and other projects and performs as a singer and percussionist.
Christopher North is a composer for film, TV, theater, dance and various ensembles (jazz, chamber music, orchestral, etc.) He's also a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumental musician (on Broadway / Grammy Award-winning recordings.) Hailing from Texas, he followed his muse to Manhattan in 1997. He is thriving in Brooklyn, with 18 albums and over 50 composer credits on IMDB, most of which are currently screening / distributed around the world. Collaborating brings out his best work, for which VARIETY says he is a "notable asset” to work "well served by a fine soundtrack.” His 1st feature Everything's Jake stars Ernie Hudson as a homeless musician. His 6th, Bible Quiz, won Best Documentary at Slamdance 2013. He is proud and honored to be part of the Sundance Family, as a Composer / Fellow in the 2015 Sundance Institute & Skywalker Sound's Music and Sound Design Lab for Documentary Film at Skywalker Ranch. His latest released features are Sam Pollard’s Grammy-nominated civil rights / music doc Two Trains Runnin’, rom/com All In Time and the thriller Cut Shoot Kill, all of which feature the composer on all instruments. He is currently working on his 17th feature, Jane Well's Pot Luck, a doc about pot legalization in Colorado.
Mr. North has taught at the 92nd Street Y since 1997, given masterclasses on film scoring at Steiner Studios Brooklyn College, Pratt, SFA and led a Maximizing Creativity Chat at AES. His favorite creation is his son, 10 year-old Xavier, and his latest passion is conducting. His 20 minute "Eavesdrop" Suite with the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra at the Montalban Theater in Los Angeles in May 2017 was his conducting world debut and LA concert music premiere.
is a born and raised New York City composer. He began studying guitar and piano at age 11. After graduating from college, he played in several pop and rock bands as a lead guitarist and singer. He became a staff writer at commercial jingle house called Fearless Music, where he wrote and performed countless commercial ads. He continued to write there for several years before expanding to compose music for other film and TV Projects. He has composed music for TV’s ‘Guiding Light’, ‘All My Children’, ‘CSI:NY’, ‘NCIS’, and numerous reality shows on the E Network, and A&E Network. He has also written music for cable shows and several indie films. Recent film credits include "Dementia 13", "Naked As We Came" and "Wife Missing"
