The Cost of Recycling and the Impact of China
In 2017 the People’s Republic of China announced their National Sword Campaign.  The focus of this Policy was to reduce imports of waste materials from other countries and increase the quality of recyclable material being imported.
This has a direct impact on Western Australian recycling, as much of our recycling is going to markets in China – or markets which will now be flooded by recyclables from other countries which were previously selling recyclable materials to China.
The cost implications for Western Australian Local Governments is potentially very significant. WALGA has developed an InfoPage on this matter.

Wanneroo Waste Weekend a Success
City of Wanneroo’s recent drop off weekend collected tyres, e-waste, clothing, cardboard and polystyrene from nearly 760 residents.
For the first time the City offered residents the opportunity to drop off used tyres for free and received approximately 1,000 tyres weighing nearly 12 tonnes. Other materials received over the weekend include:
  • 7.7 tonnes of e-waste
  • 5.32 tonnes of cardboard and polystyrene, and
  • 4.8 tonnes of clothing.

Charity Bin Changes
WALGA is excited to launch a new Better Practice Guideline for Charity Bin Management with a behind-the-scenes tour at Good Samaritan Industries (GSI).
GSI, well known for their sunny yellow collection bins, are one of many charities in WA collecting unwanted textiles and household appliances to be reused. Charity bins provide a convenient community service and help divert significant tonnes of unwanted material from landfill every year.

Unfortunately, charity bins can also be a target of illegal dumping, vandalism and graffiti, which causes community concern and costs charities over $300,000 per year to clean up. WALGA has developed this Guideline, in collaboration with Local Government and charities, to simplify processes for management of charity bins on Local Government controlled land.

The Guideline will be launched 1:30pm, Wednesday, 28 February and will provide a fantastic opportunity for Elected Members and Officers to see behind the scenes at GSI.
For more information about the launch view the attached flyer. To register, please click here.

Cash for Communities
Applications are now open for the Community Grants Scheme (CGS).
The Waste Authority invites community groups with an interest in waste management projects in their local areas to apply for a grant from the Community Grants Scheme (CGS). Funding is provided for local projects consistent with the Waste Authority’s priorities and involving practical waste reduction measures.

Applications are assessed on the ability of the project to reduce waste generation and/or recover and recycle resources.

Applications must be received by 12:00pm Friday, 16 March.
For more information email the Waste Authority Grants Officer or call63646962.
