Farming More Important Than Ever!

March 19 marks the spring equinox - officially welcoming in the spring season. While all our lives look very different than they did a few weeks ago, the pace of the seasons continues. We at Farmshare are dedicated to continuing to grow healthy, delicious, organic produce for our community. This warm weather is leaving our crops vibrant and thriving, with rows of chard, collards, beets, and carrots growing happily in the fields. Here's what's happening at Farmshare:

  • Applications for fall Farmer Starter are officially open
  • CCOF offers educational grant opportunities for future farmers
  • The Mobile Markets are closed until March 30th due to COVID-19
  • Meet this year's spring Farmer Starter class

Fresh for Less Mobile Markets

All of us at Farmshare Austin want you to know that we are taking the impacts of Coronavirus (COVID-19) very seriously and are working to support a safe and healthy environment for our entire community. The well-being of our shoppers, staff, and site partners is our top priority, and we are committed to doing our part to ensure that everyone stays healthy during this rapidly evolving public health situation. Due to a City of Austin directive, all Farmshare Mobile Markets are temporarily suspended until March 30th, 2020. Now, more than ever, we ask that you be reminded that we are all connected and desire to help one another as much as we can. We hope to see you back at the markets very soon, and will continue to post any new updates on our website and through social media.

Education

All of us at Farmshare are so excited to welcome our spring Farmer Starter students to our farm family! Take a moment to meet these awesome future farmers:

Kendall Rosales
Hometown:
San Antonio, TX

Why is farming important to you?
"Empowerment. If everyone can grow their own food, maybe they won't have to worry about when it's not on the shelves."

Favorite fruit or veggie:
Cucumbers

Grace Torres
Hometown:
Defiance, OH

Why is farming important to you?
"It's really important to farm so we understand where our food comes from, so we have a deeper connection with what we're putting into our bodies. A lot of the food now is processed and packaged, and we don't really understand what goes into that. So I think it's super important to think of food more as fuel for your body rather than something you just eat for pleasure."

Favorite fruit or veggie:
Beets

Matthew King
Hometown:
Bandera, TX

Why is farming important to you?:
"Community and economy."

Favorite fruit or veggie:
Romanesco cauliflower

Erik Panagrossi
Hometown:
Halifax, MA

Why is farming important to you?
"There are three essentials in life: food, water, shelter. I got tired of doing what I didn't have a passion for, and this is what I did growing up so I figured I'd go back to my roots and take a long shot. I chose to run on faith and make a massive change in my life, leaving everything else behind to get back to doing what I love."

Favorite fruit or veggie:
Broccoli and watermelon

Thank you for being a part of our Farmshare community. We are beyond grateful to share this journey with you to increase food access, grow the next generation of farmers and preserve farmland.

Take good care,

Support Our Work
If you are able, please consider a donation of any size to Farmshare Austin by clicking this link. We are rapidly trying to launch a temporary model for getting healthy, local produce and groceries to our most economically vulnerable Mobile Market customers. This new pivot requires extra supplies to ensure safe deliveries and extra people power, so we appreciate any financial support from our cherished Farmshare community!
