Editor's Note

Ian CarrollWe've got a lot going on in the next few months, including the Mayfaire competition and party, Brew With a Falcon, Ladies Falcons Brew Day, and SCHF. It's a great time to be a homebrewer!

Good brewing,

It’s a Busy Winter

By Bernard Lebel, President

Bernard LebelGreetings, fellow Falcons! Our next meeting is this Sunday, March 1st, at 11:00am at The Home Beer Wine Cheese Making Shop in Woodland Hills. Be there or be square! Do me a favor and, besides bringing your awesome person, bring home brew, a tasting glass, and don’t park in front of the shop, as those spots are reserved for customers. You can park at the business next door, Coastline Motorsports, if you arrive early enough.

At the meeting we will have updates on the collaborations with TOaked and VIBE, Lady Brew Day, Brew With a Falcon, and SCHF. We won’t have much of an update for the Mayfaire party, as we’re still looking for a venue and pretty much everything else derives from that. We’ll also have a small update on the Merlin Cup as well as the Big Grain Purchase.

If you’re interested in hosting a Brew With a Falcon session, please email For each session, there will be an event posted on our website with a dedicated sign up. If you’re unfamiliar with BWaF, you basically allow fellow Falcons into your place to observe your brewing process on a brew day. There is no requirement that participants leave with wort, although you’re totally free to arrange that. The club also gives you $50 to feed the troops. I’ll be hosting one this year, on March 14th in Reseda.

Also, remember that dues go up starting March 1st! If you’re close to renew your membership, please do so soon, as the price goes up to $35.

Speaking of SCHF, I hope your kölsch is lagering by now. We will taste them at the April meeting. We’ll have at least 3 of them, from Mike Resar, Roger Taylor, and myself.

Until I see you, take care!

Brew With a Falcon

Brew With a Falcon is a month-long event where members of the club open up their homes to their fellow Falcons and brew together. Most of these sites will be unlike a shop brew - in most cases there will be no wort for members to take home. Instead, brewers will signup for a day/destination to hang out, learn, and help out. Why have we created this event? Because brewing, for all the writing and lessons, is still a craft best learned by doing and watching! It’s a great excuse to have people visit each other, share a few beers, make new friends, learn something cool, and have a great time as members of the Falcons! More details and sign ups will be available on our website in the next few days.

7th Annual Ladies Falcons Brew Day

Falcons Burgerfrau Jenna Bonney & Kyrsten Beidelman will lead an all-women brew crew. We are still working out which beer to brew. There are 6 available spots on the brew crew, but we encourage all female brewers to join this fun brew day to celebrate the few, the proud, the female homebrewers of the Maltose Falcons! Only female Maltose Falcons members can participate in the brew crew. However, anyone, non-members included, is welcome to observe and learn the all-grain brewing process, hang out and chat with the crew. Beer and snacks to share are always welcome.
