News and Updates for UNC Asheville Families

April 2018

Welcome from the Director

Wow - I can't believe another semester is almost finished! Time has been flying by and our campus has been busy in recent weeks with Arts Fest and celebrating some phenomenal faculty, staff and students at our annual LEAP (Leadership. Excellence. Achievement. Partnership.) Awards.

Although April did not do such a great job of ushering in spring (we experienced our last snow fall 10 days ago in various areas in and around Asheville), it has brought us a sense of finality. Students are settling into various nooks around campus to pull together their notes and materials for final projects and exams.

With only a few days left in the semester, let's take a quick look at the upcoming celebrations and important announcements as we get ready to put spring 2018 in the books!

Arts Fest 2018

One of our favorite traditions at UNC Asheville is Arts Fest! This year, Arts Fest explored the idea of intersections through the arts and was hosted across campus from April 5-7, 2018.

Arts Fest invites collaboration from departments across campus and offered programs ranging from storytelling to modern language and cultural demonstrations to stargazing. This year the event included, but was not limited to, the Art department, Ramsey Library, the Mass Communications department, and Student Activities and Organizations.

Spring Commencement

It's almost time to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2018! Spring Commencement will begin at 9am on Saturday, May 12th on the University Quadrangle.

Along with celebrating the achievements of the entire Class of 2018, the Office of Multicultural Affairs will be hosting ceremonies for the Donning of the Stoles and Lavender Graduation. During Donning of the Stoles, students of diverse backgrounds are celebrated and presented with their own personalized stole to wear at graduation. Our students of diverse LGBTQIA+ backgrounds are presented with a cord during Lavender Graduation.

The Office of Transition and Parent Programs will host the Veteran Student Graduation Celebration on May 9th as a recognition and celebration of the hard work that our veteran students have put in to their work here at UNC Asheville.

Tau Sigma Induction Ceremony

On April 26th, Transition and Parent Programs will induct 31 new students into the Tau Sigma National Honor Society. UNC Asheville's Eta Iota chapter is in its second year on campus, and we are excited to welcome this year's inductees into this prestigious organization!

The Tau Sigma National Honor Society recognizes the academic achievements of our transfer students. Transfer students are eligible for an invitation into Tau Sigma after earning a 3.5 GPA during their first semester at UNC Asheville.

LEAP Awards Banquet

Every year, UNC Asheville takes time to reflect upon the accomplishments from the academic year and honor students, staff, faculty, and pivotal community members who contributed to those important milestones. This year's Leadership, Excellence, Achievement, Partnerships (LEAP) Awards Banquet was no different. Award recipients were nominated by fellow peers, as well as mentors, faculty, and staff, which makes the award ceremony truly community-led.

On the evening of Tuesday, April 10, 2018, Interim Chancellor Joe Urgo and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Bill Haggard, presented 9 individual student awards, 3 collaboration/organization awards, and 3 faculty/staff awards. The recipients of these awards significantly contribute to the UNC Asheville and larger Asheville community in deeply meaningful ways, promoting community service, collaboration, and leadership.

Exam Breakfast

A popular UNC Asheville tradition students look forward to is the Exam Breakfast, which is held on the evening of the first day of exams every semester. Faculty and staff volunteer to "man-the-lines" of Brown Dining Hall and serve students as they enjoy a free breakfast for dinner and watch their friends sing karaoke.

This event is a time for students to unwind, relax, and have some fun during exam week.

This semester's Exam Breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, May 3rd from 8:15 - 10:45 p.m.

Residence Hall Closings

As our semester winds down, it's time to start making plans to pick up your student from the residence halls! Residence halls will close at 9am on Thursday, May 10th.

Parents Giving

UNC Asheville's excellence fund provides opportunities to give additional support to students in many ways. Unrestricted donations support funding for innovative programs that make UNC Asheville unique, like our nationally renowned Undergraduate Research Program.

Your support creates advancements in the classroom and laboratory, in faculty teaching and research, and global perspective and local commitment of our students.

To learn more about ways in which parent giving affects UNC Asheville, visit the Parent Annual Giving website. You can now make your gift securely online.

If you have a student getting ready to graduate, don't forget - pavers are also a unique way to contribute to UNC Asheville and leave a lasting legacy on our campus!
