A closer look at Bill S-229 An Act Respecting Underground Infrastructure Safety
In May of last year, Bill S-229 received its third reading before the Senate of Canada. The Bill seeks to reduce damages to underground infrastructure by implementing a nationwide call-or-click before you dig system. In the latest issue of Construction Comment Magazine, Kevin Vine discusses the strengths of the Bill in addition to opportunities for improvement.

It’s almost Dig Safe month!

April is officially Dig Safe Month in Ontario. The Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA) has dedicated this month to raising awareness of safe digging practices across the province in order to improve safety and reduce damages to underground infrastructure. Dig Safe Month is designed to coincide with the unofficial start of spring digging season and to serve as a reminder to homeowners and contractors that they need to call or click before they start digging.

67 new infrastructure initiatives receive federal funding
The Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) have announced funding for 67 initiatives in communities across Canada through three programs: the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP), the Municipal Asset Management Program (MAMP), and the Green Municipal Fund (GMF).

RFP issued for Highway 401 Expansion project
The project will widen 18 kilometres of highway, from the Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton. Widening the highway will relieve congestion, allow for more efficient transportation and flow of goods, and help accommodate continued population and employment growth in the region.

RFQ issued for Lakeshore East – West Corridor Expansion project
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for interested parties to build and finance the Lakeshore East – West Corridor Expansion project. The infrastructure upgrades are required to help accommodate the planned expansion of GO Transit rail service on the Lakeshore East line.

Parsons awarded preliminary contract for Gordie Howe Bridge
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) recently announced it has selected Parsons Inc. of Markham, Ont., for the role of Owner’s Engineer for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project. The $61-million contract awarded to Parsons is the first contract the WDBA has awarded for services related to the design-build phase of the project.

2017 DIRT Report reinforces the critical importance of utility locating
Each year, the Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA) releases a DIRT Report which rounds up damage prevention statistics from across the province in order to identify patterns and trends in utility damage events. This year’s DIRT Report found that 2017 was a challenging year in Damage Prevention: there was a 12% increase in damages across Ontario as compared to 2016. There have also been dramatic increases in damage events throughout several geographic areas including the GTA and London-St. Thomas with 30.5% (467) and 40% (66) increases respectively.
