Proposed Middle School Relocation Would Allow PS 9 to Grow

On Wednesday, April 25th, the PEP (Panel for Education Policy), a body of appointed members responsible for all city-wide education decisions, will vote on the “re-siting” of Brooklyn East Collegiate (BEC), the charter school with whom PS 9 shares a building.  If the the re-siting is approved, PS 9 would be granted use of the whole school building, beginning in Fall 2018.

Since 2011, PS 9 and BEC have made every effort to be good neighbors, sharing the space and other resources of the building as best as possible. However, as anticipated, PS 9 has grown rapidly (from 450 to now over 950 students) and the sharing of space and resources has become challenging for both schools.

On February 9th, Principal D’Avilar sent a letter home to all parents stating that our District 13 superintendent, Ms. Barbara Freeman, will be submitting an application to move BEC to another building in our district (K458). A subsequent letter stated that on April 25th, the PEP would vote on two proposals: the consolidation of two other schools at K458 (Bed-Stuy Prep and Brooklyn Academy), and the re-siting of BEC to K458. If both proposals are successful, PS 9 will able to use the whole building starting in the next academic year.

Although this is all welcome news for the whole PS 9 community, it is not clear that the PEP will vote to approve both proposals.  That is why PS 9 parents need to make their voices heard! There are three important meetings that PS 9 parents can attend to voice their support.  The first two are Joint Public Hearings:

  • 6pm, March 19th, at K458, 832 Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn New York 11216,
  • 6pm, March 22nd, at PS 9, 80 Underhill Avenue, Brooklyn New York 11238

The third is the PEP meeting when the vote will happen. This meeting will take place:

  • 6pm, April 25th, at Murray Bergtraum H.S., 411 Pearl Street, New York NY 10038

Please consider attending one or all of these meetings! Feel free to organize your own group, or contact Ms. Derrell-Jacob, Parent Coordinator, to get connected with others who are planning to go. Ms. Derrell-Jacob can be reached at 347-563-5324 or texted through the Remind app.

PS 9 Name Change
on Hold until 2018-2019

As you may know, this year the school embarked on a project to change the name of PS 9 to "PS 9 Shirley A. Chisholm School." Despite all the hard work, the name change will not happen this year, for two reasons.

First, the Chisholm family representative is experiencing health issues, and has requested more time to consider our request.  Second, the DOE would prefer to focus their energy on the pending charter school relocation; they have advised us that one major change at PS 9 is enough for one year. Both the Chisholm family and the DOE have said that they would be very receptive to an application submitted next year. Efforts will resume in the fall to change the school name. Please keep an eye on this newsletter, the PS 9 Family listserv and your child’s FISH folder for ways to get involved next year.

Did You Know?
PS 9 Endorses Activism to Support Gun Control

On Wednesday, March 14th, PS 9 will join schools across the country in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10 am (pending approval by Superintendent Freeman). The purpose of the walkout is to encourage our political leaders to take action to stop gun violence plaguing our nation’s schools. PS 9 Students, Administrators and Staff will walk around the school’s block (following the same route as the Literacy Parade). Participation in this action is optional, and families are warmly invited to join in.

On, Saturday, March 24th, join PS 9 families and thousands of protesters in Manhattan to walk in the #MarchforOurLives to support gun control and safer schools.  If you are interested in going with other PS 9 families, look for information on the PS 9 Family Yahoo group for meeting locations and times.

Transportation Committee Success!

The DOT quietly installed some bike racks on St. Marks  near the playground at the end of February. Students are welcome to lock their bikes here during the school day.

A new rack on Underhill will be next. This rack will be larger, but installation will involve moving the two racks already there, one of which is going to be a challenge as its base was buried in some excess concrete.

The new bike rack on St. Marks is ready for use

 Book Fair On Now!

The Scholastic Book Fair is happening now through March 16th in the school, and online through March 23rd. Every class will get a chance to visit the book fair, and you can also stop in with your child after school. Please don't forget to check your teacher's wish list for the titles they'd like to add to their classroom libraries.

To shop online, use Fair ID 3812180, or follow this link directly. All purchases benefit PS 9!

A Night of Incredible Jazz at Littlefield

Over 100 PS 9 parents and friends came out to see a phenomenal group Jazz musicians at Littlefield in Park Slope.  The event raised over $4000 for PS 9.  A huge thank you to the talented musicians (comprised of PS 9 parents) who donated their time, and to Mike Tilley, who worked tirelessly to make this second annual event a reality.

Please click anywhere in this box to donate to the PTO! All funds benefit arts education, enrichment programs and teacher support for our PS 9 students.
