FHS NEWS: Term 3

Update from the Principal

It has been a very full and momentous start to 2020.

Much has happened in the world around us and we continue to hold true to our values and stated school aim of “changing the world” ourselves, not just accepting it as it is or might become. I would like to recap on two areas that we do this well: Being an inclusive community and promoting global learning.

Let’s take the first one - our positive community links. This has been recognised in a book called “Flipping Schools” by academics John West Burnham and Malcom Groves: https://www.johncattbookshop.com/flipping-schools. We work proactively with a range of community groups from our diverse communities. Concrete examples of where this impacts on the school curriculum are events like our celebration of World Hijab Day (in which the Tackling Islamophobia Working Group congratulated us for ‘leading the way’), the live casting of an interview with a holocaust survivor on Holocaust Memorial Day, plus welcoming back Steve Stacey, the first African American professional footballer in the UK (and ex FHS pupil). We are also very proud of our students who recently attended the Sanctuary Ambassadors conference where they learnt about, and reflect upon, asylum issues.

Community links go even deeper; I am very proud that our staffing increasingly represents our community. At every level of the school we have people in post who live and work locally. This makes us strong because it means our students experience many heroes from their community with which to aspire and look up to. Community at Fairfield is more than flags - it is who we are.

With regard to global learning, we are very pleased to announce that we have now stopped selling single use plastic bottles and replaced this with filtered water refilling stations that can be used with refillable bottles. This coupled with our “Meat Free Thursdays”, our whole school refit of lighting with low emission LEDs bulbs and recent planting of a wild hedge by students all adds up to us taking rapid action to avert the climate crisis. Our Eco Team recently spoke at the Business in The Community Responsible Business showcase and provided real world examples of what businesses could do. Of course, creating a sustainable environment has become a tradition at Fairfield for many years, as shown by our annual tree planting ceremony.

As Year 11 get ready for the final push before exams with preparations for PPEs (Mocks) on 24th February, I would really like to state the need for balance with exam preparations. Getting good rest and having some down time can really boost performance. Parents/carers play a huge and often unacknowledged role in helping with revision or calming exam nerves but at Fairfield we know you make a real difference, so I wanted to say thank you.

On a closing note I would like to remind all students (and staff) that the school site opens at 8am, when students can take advantage of our excellent free – yes free! - Breakfast Club which we are running as part of our “Magic Breakfasts” trial to support what we already know… eating well helps you perform well. There are free cereals available, plus bagels with a range of spreads. Please support this free provision by utilising it.
