Welcome to our November Update!

express News in Brief

We hope you all enjoyed half term and Halloween. We've had some amazing entries for our Spooktacular Art Fun, there's still time to get your entry in to info@expresscic.org.uk, the closing date is the end of today. You can send us in your photos or artwork of how you will be spending Halloween and the winning entrants, chosen by our patron John Williams, in each category will each receive a £5 Amazon voucher. We are very pleased to have been awarded £2,000 in 'Your Money, You Decide'. Thank you to everyone who came along on the 22nd September. This is a real boost for Express and will go towards our office costs, overheads, support & therapy groups.

TYA - Teens, Young Adults Support Group
Teenagers - puberty, the increased social pressure of being a teenager, exams, transition from school to college/new setting or entering in to the world of employment can be a particularly difficult time for our young people. Our new support group specifically for parents/carers of teens & young adults on the autism spectrum is growing, our second meeting in October saw everyone who attended the first group returning and some new faces too. It helps to share experiences, and to know you are not on your own. Next meeting Nov 16th further details below.

ARTS @ Express
Our Art therapy and SIBs groups are going well and it's lovely to hear parents tell us how much their children look forward to them. The therapy groups are full but we do have some spaces available on our SIBs at Express group, see our flyer below for more details and apply via our website. Our change of venue to the Express offices seems to have gone down very well with both parents and the children too! This is just a small part of what the eventual hub could provide please support us and help that goal become a reality sooner.

We have an excellent dedicated small team of volunteers but we really do need support with fundraising to help cover our increasing costs. Please do consider fundraising for us, however big or small it all helps! Some ideas ... Coffee mornings, cake sales, quiz night in your local, good as new sale or pamper evening. Please also nominate us in your local supermarket schemes or look out for community funds we can apply for. We really need your help!

Please could we also ask as many of you as possible to sign up to
easyfundraising. It doesn't cost you anything and you can raise money for Express when you shop online. See below for details.

Your comments are always welcome - please click here to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Please continue to support us it really does make a difference. You can do your bit by spreading the word, attending events, offering your expertise, and fundraising. Please do get involved.

best wishes,

VOTE NOW - LAST CHANCE TO HELP EXPRESS WIN A COMMUNITY AWARD

We are sorry if you have already seen this and voted but it is so close! We can win this grant if everyone votes. You can register to vote via Facebook, Twitter or email.

Please help keep us in the top four of our category (Health, Disability & Social Care) . We need to stay in the top four to receive the £5000 grant.

Each vote really matters so we need everyone to help.

We're competing with community groups from across the country to win the funding which would be a great boost for Express.

The money will be awarded by the OneFamily Foundation to the group that secures the most votes by midday on Tuesday 3rd November.

Please share the link with family and friends. We came very close to winning a similar competition earlier this year – so let's make sure we're successful this time!

Please vote now!
Thank you.

TOO NOISY!!!
With fireworks likely to go off from now till next weekend it can be very stressful for children who find the unexpected loud noises so difficult to bear.
It would be great to start now with a strategy that builds a self help skill that works wherever the child is...but it does takes time. Show the picture...put your fingers in your own ears... then say loudly 1...2...3...BANG! then take your fingers out . You can demonstrate how to reduce the noise and practice a strategy of counting followed by' bang'. You can use the 'fingers in your ears plan' when you know there will be fireworks if you have practiced it first! Sometimes the anxiety and fear is heightened by the unexpected noise but the counting helps. It is so much more meaningful if the people the child loves and trusts use the same strategy. It's not a perfect strategy but wouldn't it be great if the children could enjoy watching the bright coloured spectacle and share the excitement of a night sky that is lit so spectacularly.
