ACEC-SC First Word
Executive Directors Report
Good Morning,

I apologize for no update last week, but I was out for the first half of the week sick (unrelated to COVID19).

I hope you are all safe and ready for the trying time ahead of us.  I’m writing to tell you that ACEC-SC will be suspending all major face to face meetings until April 15, 2020.  The ACEC-SC Board of Directors may choose to meet, but our Oyster Roast and Silent Auction has been postponed as well as any committee meetings in the immediate future.

For those of you who work with SCDOT, I’ve been in contact with Secretary Hall and we will keep our members informed with how SCDOT will be dealing with meetings, work, etc.

In preparation, ACEC-SC wrote Congress last week asking to include associations, non-profits, and other tax-exempt organizations within any federal aid packages or supplemental appropriations measures since we have the possibility of being harmed by event cancellations.

How the SC Legislature will respond is still up in the air.  As of right now, the Senate is meeting to approve Governor McMaster’s $45 million request for what SCDHEC faces with the current pandemic.   The legislative session may be suspended for the near future.

We will continue to monitor the legislation we’ve been monitoring at the capital and report back to you.  We still intend to introduce our indemnity legislation,  QBS, and right of entry this legislative session as well as other legislation that is important to ACEC-SC and its member firms.

On a positive note, ACEC-SC hosted its annual Strategic Planning Retreat on March 5-8, 2020 at Fripp Island Resort.  Vice-Chair Jason Eppley, Davis & Floyd, brought Joe Clark, Clarks Strategic Consulting, back to help us refine our Strategic Plan.

The retreat started on Thursday evening with attendees meeting at the Beach Club for dinner and fellowship.   Attendees met early Friday morning for a Board of Directors Meeting.  After the board meeting and lunch, Eppley and Clark kicked off the planning session.
L-R: Ben Temple, PE (ECS Ltd); Jeff Mulliken, Ph.D., PE (Holt Consulting); Brice Urquhart, PE (Davis & Floyd); Jason Eppley, PE (Davis & Floyd); Theresa McClure (HDR); Melvin Williams (S&ME);  Matt Gehman (Transystems); Tom Jordan, PE (Davis & Floyd); Keith Overstreet, PE (Design South Professionals, LLC); Chuck Black, PE (S&ME); Shawn Epps, PE (F&ME); Ricky Ward, PE (RK&K); Adam B. Jones (ACEC-SC).
Clark set the stage by reiterating the importance of planning and the planning process.  We then did a deep dive of where we currently stand with the ACEC-SC Strategic Plan.  After great discussion among attendees, it was determined that we all felt like four out of five of our strategic objectives were still important to meet ACEC-SC’s Mission and Vision.  We had a quick recap and homework was assigned before ending the planning session for the day.   We had a short break before reconvening for a Lowcountry boil and fun with fellow attendees.

Saturday morning we started early.  Saturday was filled with frank discussions on membership, engagement, and legislative influence.  We looked at ACEC’s newly developed strategic plan and how we can align our own strategic plan with theirs.   The retreat ended with attendees realizing we needed more time.  The Board and attendees will continue with this process at the next Board of Directors Meeting that we are able to host face to face.  Thanks to all attendees.  I think this was a very informative planning retreat that will yield great results in the future.  A special thanks to Vice Chair Jason Eppley, PE, Davis & Floyd, for his leadership at the retreat.

I’ll wrap things up by saying stay safe out there.   We will keep you informed of any developments here at ACEC-SC or that we think will be beneficial to our membership.

Thanks,
Adam B. Jones

SCDOT Professional Services Consultants,
The SCDOT has commissioned Clemson University to assist the agency with updating and streamlining our Project Development Process (PDP). To aid that effort we need input from professional service consultants that have, or currently are involved in our project development process. Please take a few minutes to complete the online survey developed by Clemson. Click here to participate in the survey.  It should not take more than 10-15 minutes. Your completion of the survey within the next two weeks would be greatly appreciated. Please be assured that your input will be confidential and only aggregate data will be available to the research team and SCDOT.
