School improvement update

June 2016
DfE updates

Schools Week has reported that the DfE has confirmed the catch-up premium will continue to be paid to secondary schools in 2016-17, but is still deliberating whether it will maintain the current rate of £500 per pupil.

Michael Tidd has written parent guides to the new KS1 and KS2 test results this summer. They are free to download from Rising Stars.

The school census 2016-2017 guidance is now available. During the autumn 2016 census and from spring 2017 annually onwards, it will be a statutory requirement for a school to assess all of its pupils for whom English is not their first language against a five-point scale of reading, writing and spoken language proficiency.

There are expectations for criminal record checks for governors. Details are on the DfE timeline for schools.

Ofsted updates

Sir Michael Wilshaw's monthly commentary focuses on the quality of provision and outcomes for the most able.

School inspection myths have been summarised as a presentation and Ofsted is encouraging colleagues to share this.

Inspections provide an independent view of how schools promote equality of opportunity for all. There are two useful guides for schools: The DfE's 'The Equality Act 2010 advice for schools’ and the Equality and Human Rights Commission ‘Technical guide to the Equality Act’ for schools.
