RAPid NIH Updates from ORSP regarding ASSIST and Biosketches

NIH Announces ASSIST is Available for R01 and U01 Applications

....So should you use this for submission?

Recently NIH promoted ASSIST as an option for submission of R01s and other grant applications to NIH. You will see links to ASSIST in certain funding announcements and solicitations.

However, please be advised that we strongly encourage and prefer eResearch Proposal Management System (eRPM) for submissions since the University of Michigan uses eResearch for internal proposal tracking.  Also, unlike when using eRPM for submission, much of the data in your ASSIST application will have to be manually entered into your PAF duplicating your time and effort. We don't want you to repeat steps unnecessarily.

What if ASSIST is required?

In some cases ASSIST may be required in the funding announcement/solicitation. In those situations, attach a PDF copy of your application to the PAF for use during the unit review process (as you would for other submission systems, such as FastLane or proposalCentral). Then, once you finalize the project, generate a full PDF copy and attach in the Proposal Documents section of your PAF.

Biosketch error messages in eResearch

Attention to those completing NIH Grants.gov submissions in eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM):

NIH recently changed the biosketch page limit requirement from four pages to five pages, however, eRPM is still enforcing the 4-page requirement. As a result, you may see a biosketch error for Senior/Key Investigators when validating your proposal in eRPM.

ITS is working on a fix for this issue with a scheduled implementation for next weekend (May 23/24) in time for the NIH June deadlines.

If you need to validate a proposal before May 24th, please contact ITS (4-help@umich.edu) or the office that submits proposals for your department. An activity can be run to bypass the validations so you can generate the PDF and submit the application. (Please note: all other errors must be cleared before the bypass activity is used.)

Questions?

For questions please contact your department research administrator or the ORSP Project Representative you are working with on your project.
