NIH Competing Renewal Applications

Ensuring Continuity of Support

If you have a renewable NIH grant (types P, T, R, or U) with a current end date between 3/31/2017 and 5/31/2017, you will need to submit your competing renewal application for the Cycle II due date to ensure continuity of support. This cycle starts on 5/25/2016 and goes through 9/7/2016, and is for grants with the earliest start date of 4/31/2017.

When submitting to ORSP, please kindly consider deadlines to ensure the most comprehensive review.

Which Grants are Due When?

Multi-Project Applications

  • Multi-Project Applications (NOT-OD-13-075). Funding announcements that require submission via ASSIST will clearly state that. The PAF and application should be finalized in eRPM at least four business days before the due date.

Where can I find NIH forms?

What else should I consider regarding direct or indirect costs?

  • Note that some institutes limit the increase in direct costs that can be requested in a renewal application. Please review institute guidelines before preparing budgets.
    • Competing Applications with Direct Costs of $250,000 or less must be submitted according to the NIH Modular Grant Application Guidelines
    • Applications with Direct Costs exceeding $500,000 in any year require approval from an NIH Institute or Center, and that approval must be sought at least six weeks before the submission date. See NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-02-004 for details. (Indirect Costs, or Facilities & Administrative/F&A Costs, associated with subcontracts do not count against the $500,000 limit.)
