May Updates from 350 Maine

The legislative session in Augusta is well underway and we need all hands on deck advocating for climate justice and transformational policies as the legislative committees have their public hearings through next week. Bring your voice in either written or oral testimony and share your point of view! Now is the time for us to take action and let our legislators know how we are going to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and transition to a just green economy.

Get ready to submit testimony in support of the consumer owned utility!

We are still waiting for a bill number and public hearing date for the policy that will create a Consumer Owned Utility for Maine. As the Legislature is operating at an accelerated pace it is best to prepare your TESTIMONY now! The hearing could be as soon as next week!

You can watch the video of the Our Power Day of Action event here: Day of Action for Our Power: Consumer Owned Utility (from Sierra Club Maine - 35 min) This covers how to prepare testimony and write a letter to the editor.

Here are some more resources for you:

Take Action today today support the Pine Tree Amendment LD 489!

Last week the Maine Senate and Maine House preliminarily voted in favor of Chloe Maxmin’s bill to add the Pine Tree Amendment to the Maine constitution (LD 489). For the next vote we will need 2/3 majority vote in the House and then 2/3 majority vote in the Senate. Take action by:

  • Writing, emailing, and calling your state Representative – Democrat or Republican – it’s crucial in this next step.

  • Asking people you know to contact their Representatives in support of the Pine Tree Amendment.

  • Let the PTA know at if you learn where they stand.

Prepare testimony for LD 1659 Maine Clean Energy and Sustainability Accelerator ('green fund')!

We don't yet have a hearing date, but expect one soon. Time to get your testimony ready now and prepare a Letter to the Editor!

Take action now for LD 99: An Act To Require The State To Divest Itself Of Assets In The Fossil Fuel Industry

Did you know that MainePERS’ fossil fuels investments cost the system $260 million last year, or roughly $2,600 for each of the ~100,000 PERS participants?
Did you know that the $133 million that MainePERS directly lost on fossil fuel investments last year could have funded a $215,000 solar array on every one of the 617 public schools in Maine?

This could all be avoided in the future by passing LD 99. Here are some ways you can support LD 99:

  • Learn more and sign this petition here

  • Write a Letter to the Editor (LTE) about LD 99 and submit it to your local paper. You can find talking points here and guide to writing a LTE here

  • Contact your legislators about LD 99. Find your legislators here
