A while back, one of my amazing coworkers here in the Western History and Genealogy Department stumbled across an old scrap of newspaper tucked away in a book. The discolored page was dominated on one side with an ad for the Electropoise, and thinking that this was something right up my alley, she diligently passed it on to me. I did a little digging, starting with Nostrums and Quackery (my go-to source on medical absurdities), and as it turns out, she was spot on. Read more

MASONIC TEMPLE FIRE

On Saturday, March 3, 1984, over 100 Denver firefighters fought a four alarm fire that almost destroyed the historic Masonic building on the 16th Street Mall at Welton Street. The first alarm came in at 7:02 p.m., the second sounded at 7:30, the third at 8:30, and the final alarm went out at 10:08 p.m.; a total of 20 pieces of equipment were used. Read more

WHEN AN OSCAR LANDED AT THE STAPLETON AIRPORT

In 1974, Allan Miller, a 40 year-old conductor of special projects for the Denver Symphony Orchestra, did something amazing.

He returned home to Denver with an Academy Award.

Miller, along with his co-director William Fertik, took the prize in the Live Action Short Subject category for their 30-minute musical film The Bolero. The film documented the Los Angeles Philharmonic as they rehearsed and played the orchestral work Boléro by Maurice Ravel under the guidance of conductor Zubin Mehta. The Bolero premiered on PBS in February, 1973. Read more

2017 ELEANOR GEHRES AWARD CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The Denver Public Library Commission is pleased to invite nominations for the 2017 Eleanor Gehres Award. This annual honor recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the Denver Public Library Western History Collection.

The contribution can be a gift of library material - books, manuscripts, photographs, maps or other items - as well as scholarship, service, or a monetary donation that enhanced the value of the Western History Collection and/or expanded the Department's value to the community.

One-page nomination letters can be send to:

Judy Joseph, Chair, Eleanor Gehres Western History Award, Denver Public Library Commission Level Seven, 10 West Fourteenth Avenue Parkway, Denver, CO 80204-2731. 

Deadline for nominations is Monday, May 1, 2017.

COUNCIL FOR WESTERN HISTORY AND GENEALOGY

We invite you to join us as members of the Council for Western History and Genealogy. The Council is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the status of the Western History and Genealogy Department at the Denver Public Library as one of the world’s preeminent centers for research in Western Americana and related disciplines.

The Council for Western History and Genealogy is open to anyone interested in participating and donations to the Council are greatly appreciated. Funds raised through the Council are used to enhance collections, produce programs, digitize existing collections and for other ongoing departmental needs not covered by the Library’s general operating budget.
