Dear National Board Champions,

Take Action:  In being anti-racist, we must do more than use words, we need to take action.  As teachers we must step forward and tackle tough conversations with our students. Students are hearing and absorbing what is happening across our country.  Education has a role to play. In this update, you will find an article from EdWeek with resources for educators.

Maintenance of Certification

We have published additional details, including the rubric, evidence requirements, and component structure that are currently being pilot tested, on the MOC page. You do not have to wait until you register for MOC to collect evidence of your growth and impact on student learning. MOC is designed to support your professional learning. We encourage you to download the current standards for your certificate area and visit the MOC page to find answers to other questions you may have, such as:

  • What kinds of professional growth experiences can I submit towards MOC?
  • How will my MOC submission be scored?
  • How many parts will MOC have?
  • What evidence should I start collecting?
  • What are some suggestions for how I can complete MOC if I am currently in a role or teaching assignment that’s different from my original certificate area?

The first in a series of webinars on MOC will take place on Monday, July 13 from 3:30-4:30pm ET. Please register and join us to hear details and also have your questions answered.

NBConnect- Everything you need to know

NBConnect is National Board's online community for passionate educators, like you, who are dedicated to elevating the teaching profession and improving student learning. Those providing candidate support, fee support, or financial incentives are able to request access to real-time data on Applicants, Candidates, NBCTs, and Renewal Candidates.

The reports available on the Analyze tab have been updated for the 2020-21 assessment cycle! Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to make improvements to the system. The updates to NBConnect will provide a variety of resources to support the great work you’re doing across the country!

What’s New?

  • In addition to updating reports for the new cycle, we’ve added a new report, Recently Certified NBCTs. It is found under the NBCTs section > Special Reports (see attached image). 
  • COVID-19 Reports Available on the COVID-19 Exceptions
    • Candidate Reports can be found under the Analyze tab > Candidates > Special Reports (image attached).  
      • Candidate Report 4 (CR 10): COVID-19 Deferrals 
      • Candidate Report 4 (CR 11): COVID-19 Withdrawals
      • Candidate Report 4 (CR 12): COVID-19 Candidates Extended by October
    • Renewal Candidate Reports can be found under the Analyze tab > Renewal Candidates > Special Reports (image attached).   
      • Renewal Candidate Report 4: COVID-19 Deferrals 
      • Renewal Candidate Report 5: COVID-19 Withdrawals
    • Please note that these reports are subject to change as the National Board considers late requests on a case-by-case basis. Candidates received an email last week confirming their COVID-19 Exception Request (for requests received through June 12). 

Reminder NBConnect Agreement:  
All NBConnect data users are required to sign a new agreement with the start of each assessment cycle. New user agreements were due earlier this week to Any user not listed on the new agreement will be deactivated. 

How do I log in?
You will be able to log in to NBConnect at using the same username and password that you previously used. If you’ve forgotten your password, a password reset link can be found on the login page.

New to NBConnect?
After completing the NBConnect Online Application, contact Janet Haber requesting data access as a National Board network representative. Networks are allowed up to 4 users.

Portfolio Component Instruction Improvements

We have great news! We’ve made a few improvements to the Portfolio Component Instructions (Components 2, 3 and 4) and General Portfolio Instructions (GPI). 
The latest updates incorporate allowances and clarifications made during COVID-19 to the GPI. Allowances refer to situations that were permitted in the past and will be permitted in the future, post-covid pandemic. The allowances do not include exceptions made in light of, and only during, the covid pandemic. You can access all 2019-20 candidate accommodations at any time on our website
It’s important to note that recent updates do not impact scoring procedures or decisions for candidates. All changes are intended to provide greater clarity of instructions.

Portfolio Instructions Update

    • Edits to include revised Originality Requirement and reference to ENS edits (see below)

Do you have a community problem you would like to solve? YOU have the power to fix it. 
  • Is there a need to grow more accomplished teachers in your school or district?
  • Do you have a learning gap in a high needs schools that could be improved by supporting teachers through the National Board process?
As an NBCT, you can be the catalyst for positive change to your community.

Your application will be judged based on your answers to the following three questions:   
  •  How much does the Cause focus on an unmet need in this community?
  • Why do you feel the $25,000 would address the unmet need?
  • How much of a lasting impact on this community would the grant have?
The application is short and simple, and you can learn more by visiting The program officially launches on July 15 and ends when 2,000 submissions are reached.  The Top 40 causes with the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant from State Farm!

On Monday, Chicago Public Schools released "Say Their Names," a collection of lessons and materials designed "to help foster productive conversations about race and civil disobedience." 

The toolkit links to other organizations' resources on supporting black students' mental and emotional health, discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, and talking about anti-black racism with non-black students. And it encourages teachers to educate themselves on racism in the U.S. before broaching these topics with students.

In California, the Los Angeles Unified School District posted a collection of resources for teachers, for talking about race with children and addressing trauma. The superintendent of education in the state, Tony Thurmond, said the California Department of Education will also be releasing online materials and trainings

For teachers looking for more classroom resources—for themselves and their students—Education Week has compiled the following list:

Resources about George Floyd's death and the current protests:

  • PBS NewsHour Extra released a lesson plan for grades 6-12 about the death of George Floyd. The plan includes a news video (that omits the footage of Floyd's death) and discussion questions about the protests, police brutality, and media literacy. 

  • The New York Times' Learning Network shared an article about the protests, along with discussion questions, and opened comments for students to share their opinion.

  • The Anti-Defamation League has created a short lesson on Floyd's death and police killings of black people, which includes a reading, discussion questions, and action steps for students aged 11 and up. 

Resources for talking about race, racism, and Black Lives Matter:
  • Black Lives Matter at School, a national coalition, created an anti-racist curriculum guide with English/language arts, math, social studies, and arts materials. The guide has lessons for early childhood through high school students that align with the principles of the Black Lives Matter movement.

  • D.C. Area Educators For Social Justice, an initiative of Teaching for Change, has a collection of lessons, videos, readings, books, and general teaching guides for students in early childhood through high school. 

  • The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture launched an online portal called Talking About Race that's designed to help steer conversations about racism, racial identity, and the way these forces shape every aspect of society. 

  • The Pulitzer Center partnered with the New York Times to turn the 1619 Project, a collection of essays and literary works observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery, into a curriculum for teachers of all grade levels. The curriculum includes reading guides, activities, and other resources about the history of race in America. 

In addition to addressing race and racism in lesson plans, experts and advocates have urged teachers to build a diverse classroom library with protagonists who look like their students. 

The group Embrace Race compiled a list of 31 children's books that address race, racism, and activism. And the nonprofit Teaching for Change put together a list of social justice books for teens.

Joe Truss, the principal of Visitacion Middle School in San Francisco Unified and a consultant on racial equity in schools, has curated a list of books for teachers who want to engage in anti-racist work. 

Starting these classroom conversations can be uncomfortable and challenging. But for black teachers, talking about police brutality and anti-black racism can be particularly emotionally draining. The Practice Freedom Project, founded by Atlanta educator Tamara Pearson, is hosting virtual meditations and reflections for black educators

The National Board is an anti-racist and inclusive organization.  We  believe that educators must help students consider their role in a diverse world, value individual differences, and- especially in times such as these- we believe in the power of the teaching profession to defend what is good and right for all people.
