Materials are available again for National Mentoring Month.
Please order here by Nov 10th. We are receiving a limited number of materials from the National Mentoring Partnership but will do our best to accommodate all requests.

Mentoring Day on the Hill will be January 22, 2015. It's not too early to start planning. How will your program be represented an how will you engage your legislators at the capitol?

Excellence in Mentoring Awards are presented in a ceremony at the capitol to outstanding mentors. Nomination forms are available here and are due on November 10th.

We are off to a slow start, but I am sure the October report will be better. Please report coaches challenge recruits by Oct 10 here.
If you haven't already, encourage your local coach to sign up here. Engage your local high school or college team. Here's just one story of partnering with a local program from Kelsey Tyrell at Community! Youth Concepts in Des Moines:
Our mentoring program partnered with Lincoln High School to hold "Mentoring Night" on Friday September 12th. We honored three of our outstanding mentors who have matches at Lincoln right before the varsity game and distributed information about how families can get involved.  Coach Andy Campbell was very supportive of this event and will be encouraging Lincoln community members to support mentoring youth across Des Moines. Their mentees even got the chance to present their awards to their mentors and enjoyed watching a free game between the Roughriders and the Railsplitters!

Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds was joined by StemConnector CEO Edie Fraser to announce a goal of recruiting 5000 STEM mentors for Iowa girls. The IMP is working closely with this group to connect potential mentors to programs in their area. This is a great opportunity to tap a new group of mentors to work with youth in your programs. Read more about Million Women Mentors Iowa here. Additionally, Sandy Hatfield Clubb, Drake University Director of Athletics announced that the Coaches Challenge is expanding to the women's basketball programs at Drake, UNI, Iowa State and the University of Iowa, as well as the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. More information will be coming about how to engage on the expanded coaches' challenge. Read more about the Lt. Governor's announcement here.

Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a two year-old fundraising and non-profit awareness campaign that happens in December after the post-Thanksgiving shopping season, heavily promoted through social media channels. The campaign was created as an "antidote to consumption and consumerism", highlighting the profound impact crowdfunding and individual donors can make across America. The campaign has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to date with media impressions in the billions.

Giving Tuesday's website offers a multitude of tools & resources that I would encourage all to look through. One great video tool to start with is "Summer School--Making Giving Tuesday Work for Your Non-Profit", which outlines steps each non-profit can take to plan and execute a successful campaign. The Tools section also has downloadable graphics, messaging toolkits, fundraising case studies and more.
